Job summary

Los Altos Town Crier seeks a managing editor to run its daily newsroom operations in Los Altos. The role shapes coverage, edits copy for publication and collaborates with reporters, freelancers, and other departments to produce content for the weekly newspaper, magazines and digital channels.

Key duties include assigning stories, editing for AP style and accuracy, writing headlines and captions, and coordinating with advertising, production, digital and accounting teams to keep issues on

Qualifications

• 3+ years of newsroom editing experience.
• Strong command of AP style, fact-checking and headline writing.
• Sound news judgment and knowledge of media law basics.
• Experience managing writers and multiple deadlines.
• Familiarity with Los Altos and the Midpeninsula is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assign stories and supervise reporters and freelancers on deadline.
• Review, edit and approve articles for publication, checking accuracy, AP style, clarity and readability.
• Write headlines, subheads and photo captions.
• Serve as the go-to person for newsroom staff.
• Coordinate with other departments to keep each issue on schedule.
• Approve freelance invoices and forward them to accounting.
• Coach staff and freelance writers.
• Write stories as needed.
• Coordinate with editors at other Weeklys publications.
