Job summary

Hearst Corporation’s Hearst Newspapers (HNP) DevHub is seeking a Newsroom AI Intern for the winter, joining a hybrid team that builds editorial AI services and newsroom tools.

You will support hands-on automation, prototype AI workflows, and help document workflows; the internship runs 10–14 weeks starting in January, with 20–40 hours per week. This paid internship provides real-world newsroom experience and a chance to impact local communities.

Qualifications

• Experience with AI tooling and a proven track record of building prototypes with AI.
• Familiarity with prompt design, evaluation workflows or AI product prototyping.
• Understanding of JSON and basic web architecture.
• Working knowledge of Git and GitHub.
• Experience in a modern newsroom (including student publications) or a related work environment.
• Ability to self‑manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines.
• Comfort with Slack, Zoom and Google Sheets.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands‑on support for editorial AI initiatives.
• Prototype newsroom‑facing AI workflows, such as Slack‑based alerts, utilities and reporting tools.
• Contribute to internal tooling that makes workflows and development processes more repeatable and scalable.
• Write clear internal documentation to support adoption and maintainability.
• Support experimentation and evaluation of AI‑driven newsroom utilities.
• Collaborate with team members on data‑driven AI projects.
• Learn how to create digital tools and experiences that make communities stronger and readers’ lives easier.
