Position Overview

The Nevada Riparian Restoration Project Manager will plan and implement wet meadow and riparian restoration projects with partners primarily in the Elko Bureau of Land Management (BLM) District, as part of a six-state restoration effort between The Nature Conservancy and the BLM. The role focuses on low-tech process-based restoration from watershed prioritization to post-implementation monitoring, working closely with BLM and additional partners to restore high-priority riparian resources.

Location

Elko, Nevada. The candidate should live in Elko County or within 90 minutes driving of Elko.

Responsibilities & Scope

• Provide technical leadership and support to the Nevada business unit by developing, planning, directing, and implementing riparian restoration projects.
• Gain cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
• Manage program budget, negotiate and contract with vendors, assist with budget development and fundraising.
• Ensure program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
• Make independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context with minimal supervision.
• Work under variable weather conditions, remote locations, hazardous terrain, and physically demanding circumstances.
• Develop necessary designs, permits, and clearances for wet meadow and riparian restoration projects.
• Select, contract with, and oversee work crews used to implement projects.
• Organize trainings and foster collaborative efforts to instill a legacy of durable restoration.
• Co-develop knowledge and expertise within a Community of Practice with TNC and colleagues from across the West.

Minimum Qualifications

• BA/BS, law, or business degree and at least 5 years of experience in natural resource management or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience negotiating complex agreements.
• Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and web browsers.
• Experience designing and implementing restoration projects.

Desired Qualifications

• Multilingual skills and experience with multicultural or cross-cultural settings.
• Experience working with federal land management agencies, especially the Bureau of Land Management in the Intermountain West.
• Experience implementing scientific monitoring protocols, specifically BLM riparian, rangeland, and stream assessment, inventory, and monitoring procedures.
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and riparian restoration or ecology.
• Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Excellent communication skills in written, spoken, and graphical means.
• Experience in training, curriculum design, or work‑plan or strategy development.
• Experience working in community-based or collaborative settings to create shared outcomes for various populations.
• Experience designing and implementing low-tech and process-based restoration projects, especially riparian or aquatic restoration.
• Experience writing grants to help landowners and land managers implement restoration projects.
• Experience working in remote locations with reliable internet and minimal supervision.

Additional Requirements

• Valid driver’s license and compliance with The Nature Conservancy’s Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered high-risk drivers.
• Employment contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee’s motor vehicle record.

Salary

Starting pay range: $78,480 – $83,385 for U.S. candidates. Salary within this range will be based on location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Non-U.S. candidates will have a different pay range in local currency.
