Job summary

Mindspan Institute in Cambridge, MA is seeking a hands-on data annotation scientist to annotate 3D microscopy volumes of brain tissue, trace neurons, label synapses, and fix segmentation errors. Your work becomes ground truth for model training and evaluation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor level degree in neuroscience, biology, biomedical engineering, computer science, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Hands-on experience with careful visual work on images or data (annotation, histology, microscopy, data labeling).
• Ability to apply a written protocol consistently and report out-of-protocol cases.
• Basic quantitative skills (spreadsheets, simple statistics, chart reading).
• Excellent attention to detail and scientific rigor.

Responsibilities

• Annotate and proofread 3D microscopy volumes: trace neurons, label synapses, fix segmentation errors.
• Write and maintain annotation protocols with clear examples so two annotators agree.
• Run quality control: review annotations, measure agreement, maintain gold-standard sets.
• Track throughput and error rates; report on time use and quality variation.
• Inform tool/model teams about bottlenecks and frequent errors.
• Train and onboard new annotators as the team grows; assist in recruitment.
• Document protocols and decisions for repeatable workflows.
