Responsibilities
The Position:
Lead, design, and own the lifecycle management of virtualized infrastructure, automation frameworks, and shared network services at scale. Drive complex projects such as evaluating new technologies, leading infrastructure modernization efforts, and architecting resilient, secure systems that align with organizational goals. Provide technical leadership across teams, guide and mentor peers and junior engineers.
Infrastructure Solutions
- Define VMware/hybrid-cloud infrastructure strategy across environments/regions, including capacity planning and refresh cycles.
- Own integration strategy between on-prem virtualization and hybrid cloud (e.g., AWS).
Network Services Platform Ownership
- Own global shared-services architecture (DNS, load balancing/F5, certificates/PKI, NTP) end-to-end, including standards and security posture.
- Approve significant shared-services architecture changes org-wide.
Observability Platform Leadership
- Lead observability platform strategy (tooling selection, instrumentation standards, SLO governance) for the broader engineering org.
Automation/DevOps Enablement
- Set automation and Infrastructure-as-Code standards adopted across teams.
- Lead cross-team technical initiatives and represent Infrastructure Engineering in architecture reviews.
Mentorship & Cross-Team Leadership
- Mentor engineers across all levels; serve as a senior escalation point rather than a routine on-call responder.
Data Center Design
- Physical layout, power redundancy (UPS, generators, ATS), cooling (hot/cold aisle containment), rack density planning.
- Cabling standards and structured cabling design.
- Capacity planning for power, cooling, and rack space years out, not just servers.
Networking
- Core/distribution/access layer design, spanning tree, redundant routing protocols (OSPF, BGP for larger environments).
- Designing for high availability: HSRP/VRRP, link aggregation, redundant paths.
- Firewall architecture and segmentation strategy (not just rule management).
- Troubleshooting at the packet level (Wireshark, tcpdump) when vendors point fingers at each other.
Server & Virtualization Architecture
- Designing VMware/Hyper-V clusters for HA and DRS, resource pool design, vMotion/storage migration strategies.
- Linux at an architect level — AD forest/domain design, trust relationships, GPO strategy, DNS/DHCP redundancy.
- Capacity and lifecycle planning for hardware refresh cycles,
Storage Architecture
- SAN design (Fibre Channel zoning, multipathing), storage tiering, performance troubleshooting (IOPS, latency bottlenecks).
- Backup architecture — not just running Veeam/Commvault, or Rubrik but designing RPO/RTO-driven strategies, 3-2-1 backup rules, offsite/air-gapped copies.
- Disaster recovery: designing and testing actual failover between sites, not just documenting theoretical plans.
Resilience & Continuity
- Designing for no single point of failure across power, network, compute, storage.
- Running real DR tests (not tabletop-only) and owning the RTO/RPO conversation with the business.
Security posture ownership
- Network segmentation, internal firewalling, privileged access management.
- Patch and vulnerability management programs at scale.
- Physical security controls for on-prem gear.
Legacy + Modern Integration
- Keeping aging hardware/software running safely while planning eventual replacement.
- Bridging on-prem systems with SaaS or hybrid cloud pieces (email, identity, backup-to-cloud).
