Job summary

Walker Engineering in Irving, TX is seeking an experienced Estimator/Designer for structured cabling and technology systems in commercial construction projects. You will work closely with the sales team, clients, and project teams to develop accurate material and labor estimates and provide a clear cost model for services.

Responsibilities include RFP/RFI development, plan take-offs, site surveys, and turning plans into submittals.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of experience in structured cabling construction.
• Strong knowledge of cabling standards (BICSI, EIA/TIA).
• Budgeting/cost modeling and conceptual project budgeting experience.
• Experience estimating projects from $1M to $5M and higher.
• Willingness to design structured cabling systems and prepare submittals.

• Review RFPs with the team to develop accurate cost estimates.
• Perform physical take-offs from plans and specs.
• Coordinate with distributors and manufacturers for pricing.
• Prepare job-specific submittals and change orders.
• Represent Walker Engineering at trade shows and industry events.

Job description

Walker Engineering in Irving is seeking an estimator in structured cabling/technology systems in commercial construction projects.

Overall Scope

The Structured Cabling/Technology Systems Estimator/Designer position works closely with our sales team, clients, and project teams to provide an understanding of the client needs and produce an estimate of materials and labor to provide the services to meet those needs.

• Perform all duties as outlined below in a Positive Team environment.
• Interact with Sales, Project Team, and Clients
• Review Request for Proposals (RFP) with Team
• Develop Request for Information’s (RFI) as needed
• Review & Understand Specifications as required of the RFP
• Perform physical take-offs of plans for counts of materials
• Compile information to provide an accurate cost model/estimate of labor and materials
• Interact with Distributors and Manufacturers for product pricing
• Perform write up of services to be performed based on plans and specifications
• Utilize industry knowledge to assess accuracy of RFP
• Conduct site surveys when necessary
• Identify Scope Gap that is necessary for a complete and operational system
• Design Structured Cabling Systems when required
• Compile to turn over documentation for Operations Team.
• Prepare job specific submittals
• Prepare Change Orders as necessary
• Represent Walker Engineering at Trade Shows and other Industry Events

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:

• Organized, Detailed, and Accuracy Orientated
• Minimum 10 years of experience in structured cabling construction.
• Industry Certifications: RCDD strongly preferred, Other BICSI Certifications a plus
• Knowledge of Cabling Standards (BICSI, EIA/TIA)
• Estimating/Design experience with: Mission Critical / Datacenters (Hyperscale, Colo, Enterprise, etc), Commercial Office Buildings, Manufacturing, Healthcare (Hospitals, MOB, etc)
• Experience estimating projects between $1M - $5M and higher
• Conceptual Project Budgeting/Cost Modeling
• Field Installation knowledge/experience a plus
• Audio/Visual and Security Systems knowledge/experience a plus
• Skillful in writing detailed Scope of Work (SOW)
• Strong Microsoft Office proficiency (Excel & Word a must)
• Working knowledge of computing programs

This is an onsite position based out of the Walker Irving office. This job operates in a client project environment with exposure to employees, subcontractors, and trades.
