Nueces County seeks a Network Engineer to install, maintain, and secure its network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls. The role emphasizes diagnosing outages, maintaining uptime, and safeguarding data across LANs, WANs, and VPNs.
The position reports to the Network Operations Manager and provides desktop support under guidance from IT leadership. Prior IT/network ops experience and relevant certifications preferred.
Installs, maintains, and secures network infrastructure, including routers, switches and firewalls. Identifies and resolves network issues, such as outages or slow connectivity. Performs routine maintenance, software upgrades, and replaces hardware as necessary.
The Network Engineer reports directly to the Network Operations Manager and provides desktop support and technical assistance within the organization under the direction of the Assistant Director and Director.

Must have at least two years of information technology experience, plus one of the following:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, department personnel, regulatory agencies or members of the public. Ability to effectively present information to county officials, department heads, governmental jurisdictions, and the public.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Advanced understanding of network hardware, software, and services including but not limited to: VLANS, VOIP, routing topology, and firewalls. Understanding and working knowledge of virtual machine platforms, windows, windows servers, active directory, group policy and Linux.
Must possess a valid Class C Texas Driver License. Meets all security and access requirements for systems containing sensitive data including but not limited to: CJIS and HIPAA.
The following professional certifications are preferred: (1) CCNA: or (2) CCNP; or (3) CompTIA A+ Certification; or (4) CompTIA Network; or (5) Microsoft Certified Software Engineer; or (6) any memberships and/or certifications endorsed by the Telecommunications Industry Association or Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standards.
