Job summary

A regional telecommunications provider in Wisconsin is seeking a Network Engineer to oversee the design and performance of their network. The role requires hands-on expertise across various technologies including routers, VoIP, and IPTV services. Job description

The Network Engineer is responsible for the overall design, deployment, and performance of the BTEL network. This is a hands-on role requiring broad technical skills across access, transport, and service layers, including FTTH, HFC/DOCSIS, VoIP, IPTV, DWDM, and enterprise-class networking. Work is performed on-site Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys working in a small team, wants to directly improve network reliability and customer satisfaction, and can develop creative solutions while keeping up with new technologies. The role involves tackling complex projects, including creating MOP guidelines and managing data, network, security, and infrastructure.

The candidate must have extensive experience in advanced routing, switching, and network virtualization.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Configure and maintain Cisco and Juniper routers/switches, Wireless APs, Calix FTTH systems, and DWDM optical platforms.
  • Provision and troubleshoot transport and L2VPN services.
  • Support hybrid HFC/DOCSIS 3 networks with Harmonic and Arista CMTS platforms.
  • Manage and optimize network services: CGNAT, BNG/RADIUS/AAA, Infoblox DHCP.
  • Support VoIP systems and IPTV services.
  • Analyze network activity and performance to discover and prevent systematic errors, maximizing efficiency.
  • Serves as subject matter expert in routing/switching, traffic load balancing, remote access solutions, and broadband technologies.
  • Design and recommend technical solutions for improved system availability and performance.
  • Create and maintain accurate documentation (network diagrams, SOPs, configs).
  • Collaborate with management in developing procurement requirements and service contracts.
  • Interacts with vendors to resolve communications equipment and network system issues.
  • Provide training and Tier 3 escalation support for the Network Operations team.
  • Participate in change management, network upgrades, and service rollout projects.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Desire and ability to quickly learn new technologies, think independently, see multiple possibilities, and get to the best answer.
  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of ownership.
  • Experience with range of networking technologies. Layer 1, 2, & 3, load balancing, high availability, monitoring, and traffic analysis.
  • Expertise with routing protocols (OSPF, LDP, BGP), MPLS and VPNs.
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP, subnets, access control lists, firewalls, ISE, wireless.
  • Experience with authentication services such as Radius and TACACS/TACACS+.
  • Experience with network monitoring & troubleshooting tools (SNMP, Syslog, NetFlow, SolarWinds, Wireshark).
  • Familiar with Linux server/system administration for network services.
  • Knowledge of coding/scripting languages (Python, YANG, Ansible).
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills, with the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical topics clearly to non-technical staff.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Customer service oriented with professionalism in business interactions.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, documentation, and mentoring skills.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with IPTV middleware, unified communications provisioning, and fiber GIS/mapping.

Education and Experience:

  • 5+ years of hands-on network engineering experience in design, deployment, and troubleshooting (preferably in a Service Provider environment).
  • Industry certifications preferred: CCNA, JNCIA, CompTIA Network+, or equivalent.
