Network Engineer - C4ISR Rack Production & Integration
Job Summary
The Network Engineer supports the build, assembly, configuration, and testing of C4ISR network and communication equipment racks within Navy C4ISR production environments. This entry-level role performs hands-on technical tasks under the guidance of senior engineers, ensuring all work adheres to NAVWAR/NIWC production standards, technical baselines, and quality assurance requirements. The engineer develops foundational skills in network integration, troubleshooting, and configuration management while contributing directly to fleet-readiness production activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Rack Build & Assembly
- Assist with physical assembly of C4ISR network and communication racks, including mounting equipment, routing cables, and installing power components.
- Follow rack elevation diagrams, wiring schematics, BOMs, and government-approved technical data packages.
- Perform basic cable fabrication, labeling, and continuity checks.
System Integration Support
- Install and connect routers, switches, servers, firewalls, crypto devices, and ancillary components under senior engineer supervision.
- Load approved software images, firmware, and patches onto network devices.
- Support initial configuration of VLANs, IP addressing, routing basics, and device hardening.
Testing & Verification
- Execute basic test procedures including connectivity checks, interface validation, and device communication tests.
- Document test results, discrepancies, and corrective actions.
- Support senior engineers during functional, performance, and failover testing.
Troubleshooting
- Identify and resolve straightforward hardware, cabling, and configuration issues.
- Escalate complex problems to senior engineers and assist in root‑cause analysis.
- Use diagnostic tools (e.g., ping, traceroute, Wireshark) to support troubleshooting activities.
Documentation & Configuration Management
- Maintain accurate build logs, configuration notes, and test documentation.
- Follow configuration management processes for version control, baseline tracking, and updates.
- Support QA reviews and government inspections.
Production Support & Collaboration
- Work closely with senior engineers, production technicians, QA personnel, and logistics teams.
- Follow NAVWAR/NIWC production standards, safety protocols, and ESD handling procedures.
- Participate in team meetings, technical reviews, and training sessions.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Foundational understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs).
- Basic experience with Cisco or Juniper network devices.
- Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and wiring schematics.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn complex C4ISR systems.
- Basic troubleshooting skills and familiarity with diagnostic tools.
- Ability to work in fast-paced production environments with hands-on technical tasks.
Education & Experience
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in IT, Network Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- Equivalent military technical training (IT, ET, IC, FC, CT, or similar) accepted.
- 3-7 years of experience in network engineering, IT support, or electronics/communications.
- Certifications preferred: CCNA, Network+, Security+.
Clearance
- Active Secret clearance required or ability to obtain.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and install equipment up to 40 lbs.
- Frequent standing, bending, and working in confined rack spaces.
- Ability to work in secure production facilities and occasionally aboard ships or remote sites.
Work Environment
- Production floor, integration labs, and secure facilities.
- Exposure to powered equipment, cabling, tools, and ESD-sensitive components.
- Fast-paced environment requiring precision and adherence to standards.
