Job summary

The City of Irvine is seeking an experienced Network & Communications Engineer to join a fast-paced team. The role focuses on designing, deploying, and maintaining complex network infrastructure across city sites to ensure high availability and security.

Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in computer science and at least five years of IT experience, with strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS and hands-on experience with Cisco IOS.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or closely related field; five years IT experience with lead/expert capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Design and architect complex network solutions based on business requirements and industry best practices.
  • Lead the implementation and deployment of network infrastructure including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, WAPs, and VPN concentrators.
  • Configure, optimize, and maintain network components to ensure high availability, reliability, and performance.
  • Continuously monitor network performance and proactively identify and resolve issues to minimize downtime.
  • Utilize monitoring tools to troubleshoot and enhance network traffic flow and bandwidth utilization.
  • Provide SME expertise for troubleshooting escalations from juniors and support teams.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for network incidents.
  • Plan capacity and scalability for future business needs.
  • Recommend and implement network upgrades and enhancements for increased bandwidth.
  • Manage vendor relationships and procurement of network hardware/services.
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster knowledge sharing and professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., CLETS, CJIS).
  • Create and maintain comprehensive network documentation and reports.
