Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline (e.g., environmental science, ecology, planning).
  • Basic knowledge of NEPA, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and Section 106.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teams on Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) and Environmental Assessments (EA) for transportation, energy projects, and federal lands.
  • Support coordination of EIS/EA processes: agency consultation, public involvement, impact analyses, document development.
  • Help with outreach: public meetings, tribal and state agency coordination, comment tracking and responses.
  • Assist in document development and quality control for EIS/EA deliverables.
  • Explore and apply new technologies to streamline NEPA processes.

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB is seeking a NEPA Intern to support the preparation of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation for State and Federal agencies. This internship is ideal for students interested in environmental planning, transportation, energy projects, and federal land management.

Responsibilities

  • Assist management teams working on Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) and Environmental Assessments (EAs) for transportation, energy projects, federal land management plans, and other federal actions subject to NEPA.
  • Support coordination of activities involved in EIS and EA processes, including:
    • Agency consultation
    • Public involvement
    • Impact analyses
    • Document development
  • Help with outreach and engagement efforts, such as:
    • Public meetings and workshops
    • Tribal, federal, and state agency consultation and coordination
    • Tracking and organizing public and agency comments and responses
  • Assist in document development and quality control for EISs, EAs, and environmental permitting deliverables.
  • Explore and support the use of new technologies and tools to streamline EIS and EA processes.
  • Contribute to the production of high-quality client deliverables by:
    • Collaborating with managers and technical staff to develop annotated outlines and page targets
    • Providing basic editing and formatting support on draft documents and reports

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a bachelor's degree in a relevant environmental discipline (e.g., environmental science, environmental biology, ecology, wildlife management, cultural resources, planning, NEPA, or related fields).
  • Basic knowledge or academic exposure to key environmental regulations, including NEPA, Section 4(f), Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and Section 106.

The hourly pay range for this position, located in Washington D.C., is $19 to $30. The actual hourly rate offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted hourly range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.
