Job description

Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner, Neonatal is responsible for advanced care of neonates in the level III NICU, collaborating with staff and managers to implement and evaluate medical and nursing care protocols.

Responsibilities
  • Facilitate and maintain a safe environment for patients and others.
  • Perform priority technical skills and procedures required by the department safely and in compliance with policies.
  • Practice the medical specialty in an ethical manner as permitted by Louisiana law and federal regulations.
  • Utilize the nursing process to deliver patient care and facilitate continuity of care.
  • Perform procedures such as insertion of umbilical arterial and venous catheters, chest tube placement, lumbar punctures, arterial punctures, venipunctures, and other necessary interventions.
  • Assist with the stabilization of newborns in the delivery room and attend high‑risk deliveries and emergency situations when requested.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and other health‑care professionals, and participate in committees, task forces, and activities to improve patient care.
  • Seek supervision, consultation, or assistance when unable to perform independently.
  • Initiate and maintain interventions to assure continuity of safe and effective care.
  • Document patient information consistently with established guidelines and complete charts and medical records accurately and efficiently.
  • Participate in the establishment of Advance Care Protocols and the maintenance of policies and procedures in the NICU.
  • Develop and maintain a system for 24‑hour operation of the unit through communication with staff, managers, and administrative supervisors.
  • Participate in patient‑care rounds and involve nursing staff as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Nurse Manager and staff to assess learning needs and provide education to NICU and nursery nursing staff.
  • Plan and implement educational activities (in‑services, continuing education programs) to meet identified learning needs.
  • Promote professional staff development through education and other activities that enhance nursing practice.
  • Keep abreast of current clinical research findings and integrate them into nursing education programs; evaluate the impact of programs on patient care and nursing practice.
Qualifications
  • 1 to 2 years of experience as an NNP in a level III NICU.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing – Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – Health Care Provider, American Heart Association
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Louisiana State Board of Nursing
  • Registered Nursing License – Louisiana State Board of Nursing
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner License – Louisiana State Board of Nursing
  • National Certification in Neonatal Nursing (NCC)
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of APRN procedures specific to the role: chest tube placement, endotracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, needle thoracotomy, percutaneous central line placement, peripheral arterial cannulation, removal of thoracotomy tube, suprapubic bladder aspiration, umbilical artery and vein catheterization, and ventricular catheter reservoir aspiration.
  • Computer skills for data entry and retrieval of patient information; proficiency with Windows applications and keyboard use.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient‑care process.
Reporting Relationships

This position does not supervise employees.

Functional and Physical Demands
  • Light physical requirements: occasional lifting up to 20 lbs, walking and standing continuously, pushing/pulling objects occasionally, frequent keyboard use.
  • Work performed in a continuous patient‑care environment with physical tasks related to neonatal care.
