Job summary

MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa, seeks a PRN Neonatal Nurse Practitioner with NICU expertise to join our Birth Center team. The NNP will assess and treat neonates under pediatricians, attend high‑risk deliveries, provide resuscitation and stabilization, and support infant transport to higher levels of care.

Eligible candidates have an accredited NNP program, Iowa license, 2+ years NICU experience, and BLS/ACLS/PALS/NRP certifications.

Qualifications

• Must have completed an accredited NNP program.
• Active Iowa license to practice as an NNP.
• NICU experience for at least two years.
• Ability to work independently with coverage in level II NICU and at deliveries.
• BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP certifications required.
• Strong clinical knowledge and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Assess, evaluate, and treat neonates under supervising pediatricians.
• Order and interpret labs and imaging as appropriate.
• Write orders for medications, IV therapy, nutrition, transfusions, admissions, transfers, and discharges.
• Attend high‑risk deliveries and provide resuscitation and stabilization.
• Stabilize babies for transport to higher‑level care.
• Provide newborn care and assist with circumcisions as needed.
• Consult with administrative, nursing, and medical staff; participate in competency programs and education.
• Participate in quality improvement and policy development within Birth Center.

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center is seeking a PRN Neonatal Nurse Practitioner with a high degree of expertise in perinatal and neonatal health to join our team located in Dubuque, Iowa.

Opportunity Details

• The selected Neonatal Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for providing the assessment, evaluation, and treatment of neonates under the supervision of pediatricians.
• Additional Job Functions include, but are not limited to the following:
• Function as the mid-level provider for newborn patients by:
• Assessing, planning, and evaluating medical care under the direction of the attending pediatrician.
• Reporting accurately and concisely to attending pediatrician and in problem-oriented documentation.
• Ordering and interpreting laboratory data and plain x-ray film as appropriate.
• Writing appropriate orders for medications, IV therapy, parental nutrition, blood products and for admissions, transfers, and discharges.
• Attend high-risk deliveries, resuscitate, and stabilize patients.
• Stabilizing babies for transport to other hospital systems that require a higher level of care.
• Attend and provide newborn care, resuscitation and stabilization for all deliveries as required.
• Provide consultation to administrative, nursing, and medical staff.
• Participate in the ongoing competency assessment program for maintenance of advanced neonatal knowledge and skills of nursing staff.
• Participate in nursing education and ongoing competency assessment.
• Initiate and pursue self-development activities through readings, lectures and formal educational programs.
• Participate as appropriate in quality improvement and the formulation, revision and implementation of policies and procedures in Birth Center as appropriate.

Minimum Required Qualifications

• Successful completion of an accredited NNP program
• Unrestricted State of Iowa License
• Experience in a NICU for a minimum of two years
• Must be comfortable working independently as only 1 NNP will be scheduled per shift – providing coverage in the level II NICU, nursery rounds, attending deliveries, and performing circumcisions.
• BLS, ACLS, PALS Certification
• NRP Certification
• Clinical knowledge, current clinical competences, and analytical abilities necessary to formulate nursing and medical interventions.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, other health care personnel, and visitors.
