Job description

Overview

The Department of Pediatrics, University of Chicago, provides specialized care for newborns with complex diseases through a multidisciplinary team with access to a full range of surgical approaches and services across the campus and affiliated community hospitals.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides direct patient care in collaboration with consulting physicians and the multidisciplinary health team, in accordance with privileges approved by the Credentials Committee, including identification, management, and/or referral of health problems. This position will work at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth in Bolingbrook and Hinsdale.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care and formulate plan of care in collaboration with physician, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the Credentials Committee.
  • Communicate follow-up plan/disposition with the follow-up health care provider.
  • Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according to protocol.
  • Attend both high- and low-risk deliveries as needed.
  • Initiate CPR and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize a compromised infant in the delivery room, NICU, emergency room, and referring hospitals as needed.
  • Stabilize and transport patients as needed.
  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts, and issues related to practice.
  • Identify educational needs of family members and assist with teaching as appropriate.
  • Ensure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care.
  • Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.
  • Participate in the development, review, and evaluation of policies and procedures.
  • Participate in developing and implementing quality improvement (QI) monitoring.
  • Participate in providing in-service and outreach education programs.
  • Act as a resource for clinical skills for staff on or off the unit.
  • May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians.
  • Serve as preceptor to APP students.
  • Evaluate goals and outcomes taking into account benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions to achieve the patient’s plan of care.
  • Understand and respond to adverse drug reactions, with emphasis on vulnerable populations; develop and coordinate APP training and professional development activities.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • College or university degree from an accredited school/college.
  • Knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.
  • Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration; eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing.
  • Completion of approved NNP training.
  • 2 years of clinical experience in a related area of specialty.
  • NCC certification as a neonatal nurse practitioner; ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse license by start date; current license as registered nurse; ability to obtain mid-level practitioner-controlled substance license and DEA number.
  • Proficiency in resuscitation, intubation, line placement, EPIC, and use of computers.
  • Excellent clinical, management, and organizational skills; ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments; detail-oriented; ability to work under pressure; ability to use independent judgment; strong communication skills.

Licenses, Certifications & Other
  • Current Illinois nursing license; NCC/NP certification as applicable; eligibility to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse license by start date; mid-level practitioner-controlled substance license and DEA number.
