Job summary

UL Solutions in Appleton, WI seeks a Field Engineer to perform performance testing, inspections, and calibration on automotive fire apparatus to UL standards.

The role requires English fluency, NDT Level II training, and strong mechanical/electrical aptitude. You will work at client sites year-round across Northeast Wisconsin, with opportunities to verify equipment calibration and contribute to safety certifications.

Qualifications

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • NDT Level II training in MT, VT and UT with prior NDT experience preferred.
  • Strong mechanical/electrical aptitude and technical ability.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and client interfacing.
  • Ability to work outside year-round and inside production facilities for weld fabrication and assembly is required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces and elevated areas.
  • Good mechanical reasoning; welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet client expectations at multiple locations.
  • Dependable transportation required to visit client locations in Northeast Wisconsin; role based in Appleton, WI area.

Responsibilities

  • Witness performance testing of water pumps and line voltage electrical systems on automotive fire apparatus.
  • Perform safety and non-safety certification inspections and analyze test results.
  • Audit customer quality management or assurance programs.
  • Interpret and analyze examination and test results against UL requirements; verify calibration of equipment.
  • Document examination, variations and test results on UL forms.
  • Follow UL Code of Conduct and security practices.
  • Discuss procedures, test methods, and results with manufacturers and customers to resolve issues and develop new requirements.
  • Use instruments (micrometers, voltmeters, UL-supplied equipment) to perform inspections.
  • Calibrate UL equipment as needed.
  • Visit client locations for field engineering inspections and risk-based assessments.

Job description

Witnessing performance testing of water pumps and line voltage electrical systems on automotive fire apparatus, weld inspection and witnessing operational testing of aerial ladders and platforms on municipal fire pumpers and aerial devices.

Performs safety and non-safety certification inspections, analyzes and evaluates examiniation and test results against applicable requirements.

Uses technical judgment to determine whether noncompliance variations compromise the continued application

May audit customer quality management or assurance programs.

Has the authority to exercise independent discretion and judgment when making technical decisions. Interprets and analyzes examination and test results against UL requirements, verifying the accuracy of manufacturers measuring equipment and reviewing production and inspection records.

Periodically reviews manufacturers programs of production, inspection, and shipping to ensure products are produced and marked in compliance with UL requirements.

Evaluates and facilitates options for corrective action where variations from UL requirements are noted.

Understands construction and test acceptance criteria and requirements of applicable sections of Standards, procedures for Special Competency required categories. Communicates with manufacturers and customers, Authorities Having Jurisdiction and others to conduct non-safety and safety certification inspections.

Discusses procedures, test methods, test results, sample selection and variations in products, devices, processes, systems and materials as necessary to resolve problems, implement changes to existing requirements or help develop new requirements.

Uses instruments to perform inspections, such as micrometers, voltmeters and other UL supplied equipment to meet UL requirements.

Confirms proper calibration of manufacturers measuring equipment and may perform calibration of UL supplied equipment.

Documents examination, variations and test results to appropriate UL forms.

Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.

Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Preferred applicant has completed NDT Classroom Training in MT, VT and UT with previous Level II NDT experience.
  • Candidate must possess a strong mechanical/electrical aptitude and technical ability.
  • Strong verbal communications skills, and client-interfacing skills.
  • Ability to work outside throughout the year and inside production facilities for weld fabrication and assembly is required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, both assisted and unassisted, work in confined spaces and elevated areas required, and verify torque on critical mounting bolts.
  • Good mechanical reasoning, experience with welding and fabrication a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet the client's expectations at multiple work locations.
  • Punctual, responsible, attention to detail, and self-motivation are necessary.
  • Dependable personal transportation is required to visit client locations in Northeast Wisconsin, this role is based in the Appleton, WI area.

What we offer:

  • Total Rewards: We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career . The estimatedsalary range for this position is $65,000 to $75,000 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors.This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 5% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).
