Job summary

Valmont Industries, Inc. seeks an experienced NDT Inspector for first shift in Farmington, MN. You will test and evaluate welded components, interpret NDT results, and mentor junior inspectors while ensuring safety and adherence to AWS/AMPP standards.

Responsibilities include metallurgical testing, calibrations, and timely, accurate decision-making under production conditions. Strong teamwork and documentation skills are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma and 7+ years of work/educational experience or Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree.
  • 5 years’ experience in a fabricated steel environment.
  • Level II NDT certifications and AWS CWI certification.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and use measuring tools.
  • Ability to operate NDT testing equipment and work with plant personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Test and evaluate products to ensure conformance to specs.
  • Interpret reports for NDT and determine acceptance.
  • Mentor Entry and Intermediate NDT Inspectors and document progress.
  • Perform metallurgical testing including weld coupon testing and material identification.
  • Maintain calibration and essential tools; ensure timely results.

This position is for 1st Shift working Monday through Thursday from 5:00 am to 3:00 pm.

This position pays from $40.66 to $44.91 per hour depending on experience.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for testing and evaluation, with absolute integrity, of products to ensure conformance to company and customer specifications
  • Makes decisions in the area of codes (includes AWS D1.1) and specifications
  • Interprets reports for NDT and passes or rejects quality acceptance
  • Actively mentors Entry and Intermediate level NDT Inspectors, monitoring and documenting OJT progress
  • Performs metallurgical testing including weld coupon testing, positive material identification, and macro examination of weldments
  • Obtains and maintains advanced inspection certifications (AMPP, NACE, CIP, or Phased Array UT) if required by Valmont
  • Has authority to reject material, stop work in process, etc. to minimize financial loss and risk of customer dissatisfaction
  • Works under production conditions with accurate performance, completing work within set time limits
  • Accountable and responsible for essential tools and equipment, including calibration maintenance
  • Actively participates in department safety, demonstrating excellent safety practices and behaviors that conform to all Valmont safety policies and procedures
  • Maintains timely and consistent attendance
  • Reports to the Quality Engineer and has no direct reports
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
  • High awareness for safety at all times
  • High School diploma and 7+ years of work/educational experience, or Associate’s Degree with 5+ years’ experience, or Bachelor's Degree
  • 5 years’ experience in a fabricated steel environment
  • Level II NDT certifications
  • AWS CWI certification
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including conversion of fractions to decimals
  • Ability to use basic measuring tools (tape measure, calipers, fillet weld gauges, and levels) to ensure dimensional accuracy
  • Ability to operate NDT testing equipment
  • Ability to work effectively with plant employees, supervisors, management, and customers
  • Ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines, and to work through problems with minimal assistance from the lead person or supervisor
  • Ability to work timely and expeditiously to deliver an on-time result without errors
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications
  • 10 years’ experience in a fabricated steel environment
  • Associate Degree in NDT from an accredited school
  • SNT-TC-1A NDT Level II in UT, VT, MT, and PT
  • AWS SCWI certification
  • Proficiency in basic quality assurance disciplines, including the use of dimensional inspection and gauging equipment
  • Other AWS professional certifications
  • Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
Working Environment And Physical Efforts

Work is typically performed in a manufacturing plant environment and the incumbent must be able to move about the office, shipping area, and all areas of the plant where product lines are produced. Exposure to dust, dirt, heat, fumes, cold, and noise levels above 80 decibels is common. Work conditions vary throughout the week depending on the area assigned.

Many tasks are physical; the incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. (most frequent weight is 20 lbs.), reach with hands and arms, stir, stand, walk, sit, use hands for finger, handle, feel, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
