Job summary

General Dynamics Electric Boat seeks an experienced NDT professional to oversee NDTE activities at the Groton, CT facility. You will guide LT and II personnel, maintain NDT procedures, and report to the Groton NDTE Supervisor for Nuclear and Non-nuclear applications.

Key responsibilities include maintaining compliance with NAVSEA specs, leading on-site construction support, and evaluating new NDT developments. Travel <5% per year.

Qualifications

• Must hold High School Diploma or GED.
• Certified Level II in two or more surface NDT methods (VT, PT, MT) with 2+ years experience, or Level II in VT/PT/MT and one volumetric method (UT/RT/ET) with 2+ years, or Level III in one or more NDT methods.
• Must be able to certify as Level III Examiner within one year.

Responsibilities

• Review NAVSEA fabrication, welding and NDT specifications to ensure shipyard compliance.
• Maintain company NDT standards, procedures, and process improvements.
• Provide technical guidance for on-site construction support and problem resolution.
• Lead projects or technical tasks for development, improvements, or cost reductions.
• Evaluate new NDT developments, techniques and equipment for potential application.
• Collaborate with QA, Design, Engineering and NAVSEA Representatives.
• Prepare technical reports from testing, research and investigations.

Job description

The successful candidate will contribute to the oversight of Nondestructive testing (NDT) supporting Electric Boat's Groton, CT facility. The successful candidate will report directly to the Groton NDT Engineering (NDTE) Supervisor. This position will provide technical evaluation, guidance, and expertise in various NDT Methods, such as Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle (MT) and Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT). Primary responsibilities are to maintain existing NDT procedures for specific applications, monitor the NDT training programs and performance of Level I and Level II personnel, and administer examinations to certify or recertify Level I and Level II personnel in the assigned NDT methods. The Examiner will provide technical guidance and expertise for both Nuclear and Non-nuclear applications at Electric Boat.

Additional Responsibilities Include

• Review, administer and ensure shipyard compliance with NAVSEA fabrication, welding, and NDT specifications.
• Maintain company standards, procedures, best practices, and process improvements in the field of NDT.
• Provide technical guidance and expertise with respect to the on-site construction support and problem resolution.
• Serve as project or technical lead for both in-house and externally funded development and process improvement or cost reduction tasks as assigned.
• Evaluate new developments, techniques and equipment in the NDT field for possible application to current and future construction.
• Collaborate with Quality Assurance, Design, and Engineering departments as well as NAVSEA Customer Representatives.
• Prepare technical reports as a result of testing, research and development, and other investigations as assigned.

Travel is estimated to be less than 5% per work year.

Required

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• Presently or previously certified (minimum of 2-Years) as a Level II in two (2) or more surface (VT, PT, MT) NDT methods OR,
• Presently or previously certified (minimum of 2-Years) as a Level II in one (1) or more surface (VT, PT, MT) and one (1) volumetric (UT, RT, ET) NDT methods OR,
• Presently or previously certified as a Level III in one (1) or more NDT methods
• Must be able to certify to Level III Examiner status, as recognized by Electric Boat, within one (1) year.

Preferred

• Level II or III experience in VT, PT, MT and either UT or RT
• 3+ years' experience as a certified Level III Examiner

• Applicant must be able to read, write, and interpret specifications, procedures, reports and other documents.
• Applicant must have the ability to understand the basic principles and limitations of multiple NDT methods and techniques, used to determine weld and base material performance.
• Applicant should have the interpersonal and communication skills necessary to investigate problems by effectively asking questions, extracting necessary data from available sources, and working with others to determine root causes and implement appropriate solutions.
• Possess strong written and verbal communication skills to ensure effective interface with a variety of organizations.
• Possess strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills in order to evaluate situations, make recommendations, and take prompt, effective action.
• Basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, etc. (or equivalent)
