Job summary

Hoppe Technologies in Massachusetts seeks a Nondestructive Tester to perform radiographic, penetrant, ultrasonic, and magnetic particle inspections on metal parts to ensure they meet nondestructive specifications and customer requirements. You will review test orders, prepare parts with cleaners and couplant, calibrate and operate inspection equipment, document results, and prepare concise reports.

• Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university, or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills for data interpretation and testing procedures.

Responsibilities

• Review test orders to determine type of test requested, procedures to follow, and part acceptability criteria.
• Apply penetrants, developers, and couplant to parts, or heat parts to prepare for testing.
• Calibrate and set up test equipment according to material type and thickness; conduct tests per established procedures.
• Examine surfaces for cracks or defects during penetrant and magnetic particle tests.
• Conduct ultrasonic tests with transducers and observe displays to locate discontinuities.
• Examine radiographic films to locate structural or welding flaws and document results.
• Prepare reports outlining findings and conclusions.

Job description

Job Title: Nondestructive Tester

Department: Quality

Reports To: Supervisor

Summary: Conducts radiographic, penetrant, ultrasonic, and magnetic particle tests on metal parts to determine if parts meet

nondestructive specifications by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Reviews test orders to determine type of test requested, test procedures to follow, and part acceptability criteria.

Applies agents such as cleaners, penetrants, and developers, and couplant (light oil which acts as medium) to parts, or heats parts in oven, to prepare parts for testing.

Determines test equipment settings according to type of metal, thickness, distance from test equipment, and related variables. Calibrates test equipment such as magnetic particles, x-ray, and ultrasonic contact machines, to standard settings.

Sets up equipment to perform tests, and conducts tests on parts, following procedures established for specified tests performed.

Examines surface treated materials during penetrant and magnetic particle tests to locate and identify cracks or other defects.

Moves transducer probe across part when conduction ultrasonic tests and observes CRT (cathode ray tube) screen to detect and locate discontinuities in metal structure.

Examines film when conducting radiographic tests to locate structural or welding flaws.

Marks tested parts to indicate defective areas.

Evaluates test results against designated standards.

Prepares reports outlining findings and conclusions.

Performs similar tests on nonmetallic parts or structures.+

Language Skills
