Job summary

The Milwaukee Public Museum is seeking one temporary, part-time Collections Move Technician to support moving its 4 million object collection to a new building. The technician will work in Natural Science with geology emphasis, and some zoology/herbarium tasks.

Schedule is Mon–Thu, 8:30–3:30, for about one year with possible extension. Responsibilities include safe handling and packing of specimens, creating digital records, barcode labelling, photographing items, and basic crate construction.

Qualifications

• Must have documented natural science coursework or commensurate experience.
• Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately, safely, and with high attention to detail.
• Proficient in using Microsoft Excel and basic typing skills.

Responsibilities

• Safely handle and move museum specimens.
• Read and transcribe identifying numbers from labels and catalog cards.
• Create digital records from transcribed data in Excel spreadsheets.
• Attach barcodes to specimens and photograph drawers as required.
• Assess specimen stability and material makeup for packing safety.
• Pack and unpack specimens; fabricate basic packing supports from archival materials.
• Construct crates and use packing materials for large specimens.
• Operate a pallet jack to move packed crates.
• Perform other move-related collections duties as assigned.
