Job summary

State of Florida’s Department of State is seeking a Laboratory Technician IV (NAGPRA Coordinator) in Tallahassee to lead NAGPRA compliance and repatriation efforts. The role requires deep knowledge of NAGPRA, strong archival skills, and the ability to coordinate with national bodies.

You will prepare inventories, organize consultations, and manage dispositions in collaboration with museums and other institutions.

Qualifications

  • Six (6) years of direct work experience in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Law, Native American Studies or a related field.
  • Master’s degree may substitute for the required years of experience.
  • Copy of college transcript if using education to qualify.
  • Three professional references with current contact information.
  • Knowledge of the Native American Graves Protection & Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
  • Experience working with culturally sensitive holdings.
  • Knowledge and skills in collections management and archival work, including cataloguing objects, and classifying and interpreting data.
  • Ability to communicate and convey ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the Department’s compliance with NAGPRA, including itemized inventories and consultations.
  • Prepare Notice of Inventory Completions and organize repatriation of holdings.
  • Serve as primary contact between the Department and National NAGPRA; submit documents promptly.
  • Ensure the Collections Management System is updated for management and disposition of holdings.
  • Provide guidance on split and shared NAGPRA-eligible holdings and provenance research.
  • Coordinate keepsake cemetery program with agency partners.
