Job summary

Michael Foods, Inc. in Elizabeth, New Jersey is seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic to keep packaging and processing equipment running efficiently. You will troubleshoot, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure compliance with safety, food safety, and quality standards.

The role requires a one-year certificate, 5+ years in packing/production machinery, and experience in a food manufacturing setting. Proficiency with electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems and ability to read manuals;

Qualifications

  • One-year certificate from college or technical school or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • 5+ years of related experience in packing machines/ production machines.
  • Experience in a food manufacturing industry or similar.
  • Troubleshoot and repair the filling equipment (Elopak/Scholle).
  • Basic repairs related to electrical components and processing equipment (from pumps and pasteurizers to the holding tank).
  • Troubleshoot/change-over on the packaging equipment.
  • Intermediate knowledge of plumbing, heating and refrigeration.
  • Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish preferred.

  • Complete preventative maintenance requirements on all basic as well as filling and processing equipment.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals and work orders as required for maintenance and service.
  • Troubleshoot and perform repairs on various equipment including mechanical, electrical, pneumatics and hydraulics operations.
  • Monitor efficiency of all equipment and locate sources of problems by observing equipment in operation.
  • Remove or replace defective parts, determine changes in dimensional requirements using calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments.
  • Adjust all necessary components of equipment as needed using hand tools, plumb bobs and straightedges.
  • Must adhere to budget, USDA, OSHA, SQF, and FDA compliance guidelines.
  • Conserve maintenance resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Maintain equipment, parts, and supplies inventories, anticipate the need, place and expedite orders, and verify receipt.
  • Assume personal responsibility to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for everyone. Adhere to all safety policies/procedures and incorporate safety and health in all job duties/tasks.
  • Adhere to safe work practices, follow GMP and HACCP guidelines, maintain sanitary conditions and ensure that product quality is maintained. Report any conditions or practices that may adversely affect employee safety or food safety/quality to management immediately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

The mechanic position is responsible for ensuring the equipment productivity and efficiency through troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and monitoring.

This position has the responsibility to comply with safety work rules at all times as well as an obligation to reinforce safety as a core value. Ensure that all policies, procedures, and activities related to food safety & quality are followed and complied with uniformly to reduce product and process variability.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  • One-year certificate from college or technical school or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience
  • 5+ years of related experience in packing machines/ production machines
  • Experience in a food manufacturing industry or similar
  • Troubleshoot and repair the filling equipment (Elopak/Scholle)
  • Basic repairs related to electrical components and processing equipment (from pumps and pasteurizers to the holding tank)
  • Troubleshoot/change-over on the packaging equipment
  • Intermediate knowledge of plumbing, heating and refrigeration
  • Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish preferred
  • Must be well organized, able to plan and prioritize activities, and make decisions related to product quality
  • SAP knowledge a plus
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Black Seal License a plus
  • Ability to operate Power Industrial Equipment

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Workers are required to wear proper PPE such as hair nets, ear plugs, and certain areas require earmuffs
  • Must be able to work in changing temperatures indoors and outdoors
  • Continuous standing
  • Occasional bending, sitting, stooping, climbing, pushing, pulling and repetitive hand motion
  • Ability to work with chemicals and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs

The pay range for this position is $28.56 to $36.72 per hour.
