Job summary

The Archdiocese of San Antonio is looking for a part-time Musician/Cantor responsible for performing music at various parish services, including Sunday Vigil Mass and other liturgical events. You must have experience playing instruments such as piano, organ, or guitar.

This role requires strong interpersonal skills, the ability to maintain a prayerful environment, and participation in training and parish events. A high school diploma is required, with a preference for a bachelor’s degree in music or a related field.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience with piano, organ, and/or guitar.
• Basic understanding of Music Theory.
• Previous experience/knowledge of Roman Catholic Liturgy is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provides musical support to prayerful environment.
• Is available to perform at special events including weddings and funerals.
• Attend all required training and meetings on Liturgy and Music.

Employment Status: Part-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Schedule: Saturday Mass, 5:30pm; and Sunday Masses 8am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm, and 5pm. Other Masses and Liturgies as needed

Reports to: Pastor or Director of Music

Summary

The Musician/ Cantor will be responsible for performing music at various parish services, including Sunday Vigil Mass and may be contracted to perform at weddings, funerals and other liturgical events as necessary. The Musician/ Cantor will be responsible for animating the Sunday Liturgy and providing the musical environment. Must have demonstrated experience with various instruments specifically; piano, organ and/ or guitar.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

• Provides musical support to prayerful environment
• Assists Pastor and/ or Director of Music and Liturgy in securing other instrumentalists as needed
• Continuously maintains professional and liturgical education through reading, workshops, classes etc.
• Is available to perform at special events including weddings, funerals and other events as needed

Additional Responsibilities

• Attend all Archdiocese required training and meetings on Liturgy and Music
• Attends Parish staff meetings as necessary
• Actively participates in all “required” attendance Parish events as directed by Pastor and/ or Director of Music and Liturgy

Requirements

• High School degree or equivalent

• Basic understanding of Music Theory
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all levels of staff and management

Preferred Additional

• Bachelor’s degree in Music, Liturgy and/ or 2 prior years’ experience
• Previous experience/ knowledge of Roman Catholic Liturgy including Lectionary and Sacramentary
• Bilingual (English/ Spanish) preferred
