Job Description
Reports To: Principal
Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson, gets the class started quickly, gets students on task quickly, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
- Management of Student Behavior: The teacher has established rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, and movement. The teacher monitors behavior, stops inappropriate behavior promptly, and maintains the dignity of the student.
- Instructional Presentation: The teacher begins with a review, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, presents using understandable language and examples, assigns tasks, asks questions, conducts lessons at a brisk pace, makes smooth transitions, ensures assignments are clear, and summarizes main points.
- Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: The teacher sets clear standards, circulates during class work to check performance, uses oral and written products to check progress, and poses questions clearly.
- Instructional Feedback: The teacher provides feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, and supplies sustaining feedback for incorrect responses.
- Facilitating Instruction: The teacher has an instructional plan aligned with curricular goals, uses diagnostic information, maintains accurate records, matches objectives with learning strategies and assessments, and uses resources to support the program.
- Interacting Within the Educational Environment: The teacher treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.
- Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws and policies, and follows a plan for professional development.
- Additional Job Functions: Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Training and Experience
Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Physical requirements: use various classroom tools, exert negligible force to manipulate objects, comply with light work standards.

- Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to adapt to stressful or emergency situations.
- Physical Communication: Ability to talk and hear and communicate via telephone.
