Job summary

Grandview Heights High School in Columbus, Ohio is seeking a Music Director for the High School Musical. This supplemental role reports to the Building Principal and involves leading vocal music direction for the production.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in music education with experience in directing, singing coaching, conducting, and basic piano skills. Responsibilities include auditions, rehearsals, vocal coaching, and coordinating pit orchestra while ensuring student well-being.

Qualifications

• Degree in music education and/or music directing experience strongly preferred.
• Singing and vocal coaching experience strongly preferred.
• Conducting experience preferred.
• Basic piano skills preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in running the audition process and selecting cast and parts.
• Attend rehearsals 2–3 times per week and during final weeks and performances.
• Teach all vocal parts and conduct vocal music rehearsals.
• Provide resources like reference recordings or rehearsal tracks for study outside rehearsals.
• Hire or appoint a rehearsal piano accompanist for the production.
• Teach, model, and coach vocal techniques appropriate for the show.
• Set high but realistic performance standards with student vocal health in mind.
• Recruit instrumentalists, assign parts, and conduct pit orchestra or appoint a conductor for performances.
• Study the show and its score in preparation for casting and rehearsals.
• Assist with selecting a yearly musical in collaboration with the Artistic Director and full-time GHHS Vocal Music Director.
• Work with the Artistic Director to ensure student safety on stage and in school rules.

Title: Music Director, High School Musical

Qualifications

Essential Job Functions

• Assists in running the audition process including student auditions to select cast and assign parts.
• Attends rehearsals at least two to three times per week according to the schedule set by the Artistic Director.
• Attends every rehearsal within the final weeks of the production, as well as all performances.
• Teaches all vocal parts and harmonies to individuals and groups and conducts vocal music rehearsals.
• Selects and provides resources like reference recordings or rehearsal tracks for students to study vocal parts individually outside of rehearsals.
• Hires or appoints a rehearsal piano accompanist for the production.
• Teaches, models, and coaches vocal techniques appropriate for the style of the show.
• Sets expectations of high-quality, yet realistic performance standards without sacrificing student vocal health and/or social-emotional well-being.
• Recruits instrumentalists, assigns parts, and conducts the pit orchestra, or hires/appoints a conductor for the performances.
• Thoroughly studies the show and its musical score in preparation for casting and rehearsals.
• Assists with the selection of a yearly musical in collaboration with the Artistic Director and the full-time GHHS Vocal Music Director.
• Works with the Artistic Director to ensure the safety of students by adhering to both stage safety while on stage and school rules and regulations as set by the Board of Education and the state.
• Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students. Deals with inappropriate behavior quickly and effectively according to the school behavior policy.

Working Conditions

• Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather
• Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see and read
• Regular requirement to lift equipment, up to 25 pounds
