The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA is seeking a Museum Guide to welcome visitors and offer introductory tours of current exhibitions and Norman Rockwell’s Studio. You will provide interpretive insights, historical context, and help guests connect with the art through engaging, thoughtful storytelling.

Guides commit to one or two daily shifts from June to October, with options to work a weekly schedule year‑round.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Lead tours of the Museum's collection and special exhibitions for general visitors and groups.

• Execute daily logistical operations and follow security procedures.
• Attend training sessions and walkthroughs to deepen knowledge of Rockwell’s life, art, and collections.
• Incorporate feedback from staff and evaluations to improve visitor experience.
• Welcome visitors of all ages and backgrounds with gracious, professional interactions.
• Communicate scheduling, availability, and insights with staff; collaborate across roles.

The Position

You’ll serve as a Museum Guide, welcoming and engaging visitors by giving introductory tours of current exhibitions and Norman Rockwell’s Studio, providing interpretive insights and historical context. If you’re someone who has thought about doing this, it’s your opportunity. We are looking for articulate and motivated people who are willing to make a long‑term commitment to the Museum and to share their enthusiasm for art in a serious and thoughtful way. You can be a Guide even if you work during the day—training sessions and tours are scheduled both days and evenings. Expertise in museum education and in modern or American art history is a plus, but not a prerequisite. Current Guides include working professionals, retirees, artists, and more. NRM Guides must commit to one or two daily shifts per week from June to the end of October. During the rest of the year, most of our Guides choose to work one shift a week or every other week. Other Guides can choose to take off the winter, rejoining the program in May.

Responsibilities

• Lead tours of Norman Rockwell Museum’s collection and special exhibitions for general visitors and tour groups.
• Develop tours based on training and materials provided by the museum and on further independent research.
• Provide guided learning experiences for visitors—through a range of formal and informal interactions—to increase awareness and understanding of illustration art, promote visual literacy, and foster connections between our visitors and the art on view.
• Execute daily logistical operations and follow mandated security procedures.
• Attend training sessions and curator‑led walkthroughs of exhibitions. Build knowledge of illustration art and artists; Norman Rockwell’s life, artistic process, and artwork; and NRM collections and special exhibitions.
• Incorporate feedback from NRM staff and ongoing tour evaluations to ensure high‑quality visitor engagement and accurate and compelling learning experiences.
• Welcome visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities and create a sense of belonging through consistently gracious and professional interactions.
• Communicate consistently, reliably, and effectively with NRM staff about scheduling, availability, challenges, and insights.
• Work effectively with colleagues across all group identities and positions/roles.

Requirements

All positions at NRM require some use of technology and staff are expected to be comfortable within an information technology environment. Knowledge and skills for basic use of computer hardware, software, email, calendars, and the Internet enhances efficiency, workflow and overall experience within the workplace.
