Job summary

The South Carolina State Museum is seeking enthusiastic, engaging, and dependable museum Educators to inspire wonder and a love of learning through dynamic educational experiences. Educators deliver high-quality programming for school groups, families, camps, and public audiences, including hands-on STEAM activities, astronomy, history, art, natural history, and more across diverse settings.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; college coursework in education, child development, science, history, museum studies, or a related field a plus.
• Experience working with children, youth programs, camps, museums, recreation, or informal learning environments preferred.
• Enthusiasm for working with learners of all ages.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Dependable, adaptable, and able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365, including Outlook (calendar management), Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
• Willingness to learn a broad range of museum content and instructional techniques.

Responsibilities

• Deliver engaging educational programs for school groups, camps, homeschool programs, families, and public audiences.
• Facilitate hands-on and auditorium-style learning experiences across a variety of content areas, with a heavy focus on science and STEAM, along with some history, art, natural history, and astronomy content.
• Adapt teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners while creating welcoming and inclusive learning environments.
• Support inquiry-based, maker-centered, and experiential learning approaches that encourage wonder, creativity, and exploration.
• Ensure the physical and emotional safety of participants during all educational experiences.
• Assist with setup, preparation, cleanup, and reset of classrooms, educational materials, and program spaces.
• Support camps, special events, Accessibility Mornings, homeschool programs, scout workshops, and other educational initiatives as assigned.
• Assist with school group arrival, visitor wayfinding, and other daily education operations as needed.
• Participate in staff trainings and professional development opportunities.
• Occasionally assist with outreach programs and educational events throughout South Carolina as assigned.
• Contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment and provide excellent customer service to museum guests.
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Audience Engagement department.
