Job summary

TEGNA Inc. in Knoxville is seeking a Story Desk Manager to lead the newsroom’s Story Management Desk and oversee daily coverage across streaming, digital, social, and linear platforms.

You will manage a team of reporters and editors, guiding story development and editorial decisions in a fast-paced, multi-platform environment. The ideal candidate has strong news judgment, newsroom leadership experience, and a track record of breaking news and enterprise reporting while coaching others to excel

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications, or 3-5 years of newsroom experience.
• Strong news judgment and ability to make fast editorial decisions.
• Proven success handling breaking news and developing coverage across platforms.
• Experience managing or leading journalists in a fast-paced newsroom.
• Knowledge of digital and newsroom operations.
• Understanding of digital, streaming and linear news consumption.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily coverage decisions and reporter assignments across platforms.
• Determine best format and platform for each story with clear timelines.
• Ensure stories are published quickly and updated across digital platforms.
• Identify opportunities for live and continuous streaming coverage.
• Ensure compelling presentation with headlines, video, images and live content.
• Plan coverage for upcoming events and news cycles.
• Lead frequent story check-ins and adjust coverage as stories develop.
• Use audience insights and social listening to inform coverage decisions.
• Maintain competitive, engaging content across all platforms.
• Provide editorial guidance to ensure accuracy and journalistic standards.
• Uphold TEGNA’s standards across platforms.
