Job summary

Houston Methodist is seeking a skilled radiological technician to work three 12-hour shifts per week in our Outpatient Imaging Center. The role involves performing CT and x-ray procedures, ensuring patient safety, and assisting physicians during diagnostic processes.

Qualified candidates will have a background in multiple imaging modalities, preferably with experience in both x-ray and CT. Strong communication and technical skills are essential for providing excellent patient care and collaborating effectively with healthcare teams.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an education program approved for relevant certifications.
  • Two years' combined experience in multiple specialty modalities preferred.
  • BLS certification required; must have ARRT certification relevant to imaging.

Job description

This position works three, 12-hour shifts per week from 7:00am-7:30pm in the Outpatient Imaging Center performing CT and x-ray.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
  • Graduate of education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.
EXPERIENCE
  • Two years’ combined experience in more than one specialty modality
  • Prior experience performing both x-ray and CT scans is strongly preferred
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association
  • Must have one of the following: ARRT-MRI or ARRT-M or ARRT-CT
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security

  • Possesses basic computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systems to include Hospital/Radiology Information Systems and Office software to maintain patient and exam documents
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal and team player skills with all levels of the healthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer service to all patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers
  • Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision including organizing work flow and actively participating in problem-solving

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs diagnostic radiology procedures to include but not limited to X-ray, MRI, CT, Mammography, Ultrasound, IR exams.
  • Proactively assesses, identifies and responds to the needs of the patient for adjustment or intervention to optimize patient care, image quality and patient experience which includes positioning, physiology, procedure preparation, and technical factors. Modifies technical factors to achieve desired imaging results and recognizes complications and limitations associated with certain procedures.
  • Provides direct assistance to physicians during diagnostic procedures, including assisting with sterile technique.
  • Performs, when applicable, what is required to meet the needs of patient care which may be one or more of the following: transporting, registration, admissions, answering phones, contacting physicians, taking and monitoring vital signs, EKGs, starting IVs, etc.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Follows safety standards and conducts all imaging procedures accordingly. Uses ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) to protect patients, staff and general public, and follows radiation safety standards. Properly utilizes patient radiation protection and immobilization during diagnostic procedures. Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures, regularly practices aseptic techniques, and ensures compliance with radiation safety and infection control procedures. Complies with job role, department and hospital safety standards, practices and policies.
  • Identifies opportunities for corrective action and process improvement providing recommendations and contributes to meeting department and hospital targets for quality and safety. Reports “near misses” and inputs errors promptly into appropriate hospital patient safety reporting system to improve processes and identify trends.
  • Ensures all imaging equipment has had quality control (QC) performed as required and is in safe working order prior to use. Reports any malfunctions to management and regularly practices preventative maintenance procedures; calls for service if needed.
  • Assists with implementation and education of department-based safety initiatives and standards of practice.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures. Enters charges at the time service is delivered.
  • Utilizes resources with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed.
