Job summary

ZEISS Group in Wixom, MI seeks an experienced Health, Safety, and Environmental leader to oversee EHS, radiation safety, and regulatory compliance for multiple sites.

You will design, implement, and maintain safety programs, lead audits and CAPA, ensure ISO 14001 and DOT/NRC compliance, and partner with facilities to protect people and the environment. The role requires strong analytical skills and cross‑functional collaboration; 8+ years of experience is expected.

Qualifications

• Associate degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred in safety, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or engineering.
• Minimum 8 years of progressive experience in EHS and/or radiation safety.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, RCRA, NRC/Agreement State regulations.
• ISO 14001 implementation experience.
• Excellent communication and training skills.

Responsibilities

• Health & Safety Management: Design, implement, and maintain the EHS management system, policies, and standards.
• Environmental Compliance & Sustainability: Manage ISO 14001 requirements and permits; oversee hazardous waste and DOT compliance.
• Radiation Safety Officer: Serve as RSO, ensure NRC/compliance, manage dosimetry and radiation surveys.
• Training: Develop and deliver specialized training on radiation safety, HAZMAT, and annual refreshers.
• Risk Assessment, Governance & Training: Lead risk assessments and maintain SDS systems; monitor regulatory changes.

Develops, implements, and maintains programs, procedures, training, and audits to ensure a safe and healthy workplace, compliant radiation use, and adherence to environmental, DOT, OSHA, and other applicable regulations. Partners with the Facilities – East Manager and other facility leaders to implement EHS and radiation requirements within buildings and operations.Work directly with Management Team to ensure their facility needs are satisfied. Perform other related duties as directed to assist the Head of Business Excellence, Quality, & Digital Solutions.Sound Interesting?Here’s what you’ll do:Health & Safety ManagementDesign, implement, and maintain the Employee Health and Safety (EHS) management system, including policies, procedures, and standards.Develop and deliver safety training (e.g., general safety, hazard communication, ergonomics, emergency response) and track completion.Lead Emergency Response Team (ERT) programs and emergency preparedness, including drills and emergency plans, in collaboration with Facilities.Conduct and document GEMBA safety walks and inspections; track findings through to closure.Lead incident reporting, investigation, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).Maintain OSHA‑required logs and reporting (e.g., OSHA 300, 300A, 301) and interface with regulators as needed.Environmental Compliance & Sustainability (Program Ownership)Maintain and implement ISO 14001 environmental management requirements for covered sites.Own and manage environmental permits and compliance obligations (e.g., water, stormwater, wastewater, air, waste).Manage RCRA hazardous waste programs and associated documentation, labeling, storage, and disposal.Maintain DOT compliance for hazardous materials shipping, including training and documentation.Define and oversee hazardous waste and recycling programs; work with Facilities to implement physical collection, storage areas, and vendor interfaces.Track and report environmental performance metrics and support corporate sustainability initiatives.Radiation Safety Officer ResponsibilitiesServe as Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for licensed activities; ensure compliance with NRC or Agreement State regulations and license conditions.Ensure radiation exposures are ALARA and in accordance with applicable regulations (e.g., 10 CFR Part 20).Develop, maintain, and distribute radiation protection procedures and ensure implementation in daily operations.Verify that individuals installing, maintaining, or servicing devices containing sealed sources are properly licensed/trained.Determine monitoring requirements; manage personnel dosimetry programs, including badge issuance, exchange, and record review.Perform or coordinate required radiation surveys and dose assessments; maintain related records.Conduct and document annual (or more frequent) audits of the radiation protection program; drive corrective actions.Manage licensing activities, including initial applications, amendments, renewals, and decommissioning/disposal of licensed equipment.Review and approve new uses and users of radioactive equipment prior to first use.Provide periodic on‑site supervision and technical guidance on radiation safety practices.Risk Assessment, Governance & TrainingLead risk assessments (e.g., JSAs/JHAs, ergonomic, chemical, radiation) and ensure controls are implemented.Maintain Safety Data Sheet (SDS) systems and ensure accessibility for employees.Develop and deliver specialized training, including radiation principles, gauge safety, HAZMAT, and required annual refreshers.Monitor regulatory changes and corporate requirements; update programs and communicate changes to stakeholders.Ensure alignment and compliance with ZEISS Security, Safety, and Corporate Policies.Collaboration with Facilities and OperationsDefine EHS and radiation requirements that impact facility design, equipment, layouts, and operations.Work with the Facilities – East Manager and other facility leads to:Implement engineering controls, signage, storage areas, ventilation, and other physical safeguards.Plan EHS aspects of projects, relocations, or new installations.Coordinate emergency response infrastructure (e.g., alarms, evacuation routes, spill response kits).Provide EHS/radiation input into vendor and contractor controls; ensure contractors meet site EHS requirements.Other duties as assigned related to EHS, radiation safety, and regulatory compliance.Training for the employees should include:Principles and practices of radiation protectionGauge safety trainingHAZMAT trainingAnnual refreshersEnsure compliance of Security, Safety, and Corporate Policy.Do you qualify?Associate degree required; bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field preferred.Relevant professional certifications desirable (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHMM, or recognized RSO training).Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in EHS and/or radiation safety; experience in a manufacturing or technical environment preferred.Demonstrated expertise in OSHA, EPA, DOT, RCRA, and radiation regulations (NRC/Agreement State).Experience implementing ISO 14001 or similar management systems.Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; ability to lead investigations and root cause analysis.Excellent verbal and written communication, facilitation, and training skills.Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate across functions and sites.Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and EHS management tools.Working Environment:8 hour day shift, Monday–Friday, – not-hybrid *on call availabilityAbility to work outside normal business hours as needed (e.g., incident response, audits, training) <20%.Up to 20% travel;
