Job summary

Woodland Hills School District is seeking a Multi-Faceted Tradesman/Electrician to perform electrical, plumbing, carpentry and general maintenance tasks across district facilities. Shifts include 7:00 AM–3:00 PM or 3:00 PM–11:00 PM, with duties covering trade and non-trade assignments and leadership support for coworkers.

The role requires broad maintenance knowledge, safety awareness around students, and ability to operate a wide range of equipment, with emphasis on compliance with current laws

Qualifications

  • Possess a current, valid driver's license for the State of Pennsylvania.
  • Ability to drive or learn to operate manual and automatic transmission vehicles including trucks, tractors, dump trucks, vans; learn snow plowing and grass cutting.
  • Ability to tow trailers when necessary.
  • Knowledge of tools, materials; standard skills in Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, Carpentry, Plastering, Cementing, Painting, Landscaping, Welding.
  • Ability to read blueprints, building plans, sketches, and schematic drawings.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, roofs or heights.
  • Lift/move heavy items; perform in reasonable weather.
  • Assist multi-faceted tradesmen in task completion efficiently.
  • Satisfactory score on a mechanical aptitude test (written and practical).
  • Personal characteristics conducive around children.

Responsibilities

General Maintenance Position Qualifications

  • The ability to drive or learn to operate manual and automatic transmission vehicles that include pick up trucks, tractors, dump trucks, stake trucks, vans, and cube vans, and be responsible to learn snow plowing with vehicles and grass cutting with tractors.
  • Possess the ability to tow trailers on the back of vehicles when necessary.
  • Possess knowledge and skills with tools, materials, and possess standard skills in some areas of general maintenance that includes: Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, Carpentry, Plastering, Cementing, Painting, Landscaping, and Welding.
  • Have the ability and knowledge to follow diagrams to accurately layout fields for athletic events.
  • Have the ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, roof, or other areas at various heights above the ground.
  • Have basic ability to read and understand blueprints, building plans, sketches, and schematic drawings.
  • Able to lift and/or move heavy items with or without assistance.
  • Able to perform in reasonable weather conditions.
  • Able to assist multi-faceted tradesmen in completion of tasks efficiently and professionally.
  • Obtain a satisfactory score on a mechanical aptitude test that includes written and practical demonstration.
  • Possess personal characteristics that are conducive around children.
Preferred Qualifications For Internal Candidates Only
  • 18 months general maintenance experience
  • Entry level certification
  • Enrollment in a nationally accredited program. Must complete the program within 24 months from time of enrollment.
GENERAL DUTIES

The employee shall be able to perform, but not be limited to the following duties:

  • Have working knowledge and skills in the following phases of maintenance: Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, Landscaping.
  • Demonstrate at least two (2) skills in each category and be willing to learn the skills when need arises:
  • Electrical
  • Locating and repairing short circuits.
  • Installing new outlets and switches.
  • Changing ballasts.
  • Installing and replacing motors within reasonable capability.
  • Changing motor pulleys.
  • Servicing buffers, wet vacuums, sweepers, dryers, and washers.
  • Trouble-shooting motors.
  • Servicing emergency power generators.
  • Plumbing
  • Operating an electric or manual sewer eel.
  • Laying out and fitting threaded pipe.
  • Replacing a thermocouple.
  • Sweating copper tubing.
  • Replacing and recalibrating thermostats.
  • Servicing dishwashers, garbage disposal, and sprinklers.
  • Installing and repairing sinks and commodes.
  • Trouble-shooting boilers, hot water tanks, and unit ventilators.
  • Carpentry
  • Installing floor tile.
  • Installing window glass.
  • Constructing partitions, using wood and/or steel studding with a wallboard finish. d) Hanging wooden and metal doors; installing door locks and closures.
  • Building forms.
  • Minor roofing repairs.
  • Rough and smooth plaster work.
  • Rough and finish cement work.
  • Laying brick and block.
  • Landscaping
  • Apply fertilizer and pesticides to all fields per manufacturer directions.
  • Aerating, topdressing, and seeding all fields.
  • Use all grass cutting equipment including riding mowers, push mowers, and grass trimmers. d) Use chainsaw and other tools for tree and bush cutting, pruning, and removal.
  • Use other grounds keeping equipment (roto-tilling, ball field dressing, line painting, etc.).
  • Support the building beautification process by planting and caring for annual and perennial flowering plants and bushes.
  • Work with seasonal hire landscapers to maintain and improve the appearance of all School District buildings.
  • Be responsible for snow removal as required; will require responding to call-ins.
  • Must be able to operate all heavy equipment: Back Hoe, Bob Cat, Snow plow, front end loaders, rollers, graders, hoists, drills, pumps and compressors.
  • General Tasks
Be willing to learn the identified skills when needs arise, for the following tasks:
  • Repair/restring blinds.
  • Repair fencing.
  • Identify problems and make minor repairs to lawnmowers, chainsaws, weed eaters, and District vehicles.
  • Have the ability to identify or seek assistance with tools and various sizes of nuts, bolts, screws, etc. Be able to maintain tools and keep stationary and moving equipment in working order.
  • Dig ditches with hand and mechanical tools.
  • Paint and plaster the following but not limited to: classrooms, halls, ceilings, and stairwells. g) Layout and paint parking lanes, curbs, and fences.
  • Patch and seal driveways, tennis courts, play areas, and fences.
  • Execute other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities.
Locksmithing
  • Must have demonstrated aptitude and competence in locksmithing.
  • Successful experience in all phases of locksmithing, such as cutting keys, setting tumblers to individual sub-master and master keying, repairing and replacing door closures, replacing hinges, hanging doors, etc.
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the proper operation, repair and replacement of windows, doors, locks, hinges, frames, etc. in the facilities owned or operated by the district.
  • Follows and enforces the district's key control system. Ensures that the issuing of keys are approved by the District's Facilities Manager and/or the District Administration. Ensures that keys are signed for using the district's approved key request form. Maintains records of all keys issued.
  • Determines which repair jobs may be performed in-house by personnel on the staff and which must be performed by outside contractors, and advises the Director of Facilities accordingly.
  • Recommends supplies and equipment for purchase.
  • Must possess basic computer usage capability for record keeping and for researching pricing of supplies and parts.
  • Must possess basic electrical knowledge and understanding for working on electric operated doors, locks, and latches.
  • Estimates costs of repair projects in terms of labor, material, and overhead.
  • Examines district-owned facilities on a regular basis for purposes of preventive maintenance.
  • Performs other related duties as directed.
  • Execute other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities, if within physical capabilities.
