Job summary

Chief Leschi Schools is seeking an MS Assistant Boys Basketball Coach to support the middle school program under the head coach. You will help plan practices, manage rosters, and contribute to the athletic program aligned with school policies and WIAA standards.

The role requires initiative, reliability, and effective communication with staff, students, and families. The position is part-time and may involve duties across the athletic department as needed.

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Hold a valid and current First Aid Certification card or be enrolled in a Red Cross First Aid card training course.
• Associate’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in physical education, coaching or related field, or
• At least three (3) years of direct work experience as a coach of a major sports team.
• Experience in coaching a diverse student population.
• Current employee of Chief Leschi Schools – preferably a certificated employee.

Responsibilities

• Implements and enforces all decisions and directives of the head coach.
• Assists the head coach with planning and conducting all practice sessions consistent with the plan of implementation.
• Maintains a current and accurate squad roster at all times, being sure that it is on file with the head coach.
• Supports the head coach in conducting the athletic program for the girls’ basketball team and the total athletic program of Chief Leschi Schools; contributes to and supports team strategies as outlined by the head coach.
• Demonstrates loyalty to the head coach and the team.
• Attends team staff meetings as directed by the head coach, Athletic Director, or building principal.
• Assumes any assigned duties by the head coach pertaining to the team, including conducting portions of practice drills, handling equipment, determining eligibility, working with student managers, scouting, handling public relations, and keeping statistics.

SUMMARY: The Assistant MS Boys Basketball Coach assists in providing leadership and direction to the middle school boysbasketball team as coordinated with the team’s head coach. The assistant coach enforces all rules of the WIAA as they relate to the respective sport and assists with the organization and administration of the team.

ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

• Implements and enforces all decisions and directives of the head coach
• Assists the head coach with planning and conducting all practice sessions consistent with the plan of implementation
• Maintains a current and accurate squad roster at all times, being sure that it is on file with the head coach
• Supports the head coach in conducting the athletic program for the girls’ basketball team and the total athletic program of Chief Leschi Schools; contributes to and supports team strategies as outlined by the head coach
• Demonstrates loyalty to the head coach and the team
• Attends team staff meetings as directed by the head coach, Athletic Director, or building principal
• Assumes any assigned duties by the head coach pertaining to the team, including conducting portions of practice drills, handling equipment, determining eligibility, working with student managers, scouting, handling public relations, and keeping statistics
• In the absence of the head coach, assumes all responsibilities designated as those of the head coach
• Reports any injuries to the head coach and/or Athletic Director
• Assists with the inspection of all equipment, oversees the issuance and collection of equipment, and maintains equipment inventory records; advises the head coach, who is responsible for all equipment, of any equipment that needs repair or certification
• Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Be at least 18 years old

Possess a high school diploma or GED

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associate’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in physical education, coaching or related field, or

At least three (3) years of direct work experience as a coach of a major sports team (Alternative combinations of education and experience will be evaluated by People & Talent Management for comparability.)

Experience in coaching a diverse student population

Current employee of Chief Leschi Schools – preferably a certificated employee

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

Able to maintain a successful criminal background clearance

Successful and/or clear drug screening

KNOWLEDGE OF:

School board policies and procedures

Skills involved in sport of girls’ basketball

WIAA interscholastic activities policies and coaching standards

ABILITY TO:

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:Head Coach or designee

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this position. Workplace accommodations may be provided in accordance with CLS Tribal policy.

• Employees may be required to sit or stand for extended periods and perform tasks involving reaching, talking, hearing, bending, stooping, twisting, squatting, kneeling, and fine motor coordination.
• This position may require regularly lifting or moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds, with appropriate assistance or equipment as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed in an indoor educational environment with moderate noise levels. Employees may work in and/or proximity to classrooms, students, and standard office or instructional equipment. Conditions may vary based on program needs.
