Job summary

01 ETCH East Tennessee Children's Hospital Association, Inc. is seeking a skilled MRI Technologist to perform a variety of MRI procedures for diagnosis and anatomical delineation. You will report to the Director of Radiology.

The role requires ARRT registration, completion of an accredited Health Science program, and 1 year radiology experience with preference for 3–5 years and MRI experience. MRI certification preferred.

Job description

Basic Purpose of the Job

Performs a variety of MRI procedures using a high‑energy magnetic field for diagnosis of disease processes and delineation of normal/abnormal anatomy as well as pathological conditions in areas of the human body. Reports to Director—Radiology/Department Manager.

Job Requirements

• Supervisory Responsibilities: No
• Minimum Education: Completion of an accredited Health Science program.
• License/Certification Required: Registered by the American Registry of Radiographic Technology (ARRT). MRI certification preferred.
• Minimum Work Experience: 1 year general radiology experience required; 3‑5 years general radiology experience or equivalent with 2 years MRI experience preferred.

• Operate MRI scanner and auxiliary equipment to produce quality images.
• Work flexible hours—alternate shift, rotates on call for evening, weekend, and holiday coverage.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge and skill levels in area of expertise to ensure production of high quality images.
• Safe operation of equipment and accessories with proper warm‑up exposure, daily QC, and good reporting techniques.
• Follow proper shutdown procedures for scanning and processing equipment.
• Cleans equipment without damaging it and keeps assigned area clean and organized.
• Apply quality control guidelines, state and federal regulations, and department policies/procedures.
• Utilize the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and complete safety reports.
• Basic scheduling in Community Wide Scheduling (CWS).
• Demonstrate radiation and MRI safety and protection techniques (ALARA, dosimetry, shielding, collimation, magnetic field).
• Perform correct exam on correct patient using two patient identifiers: name and date of birth, and verify the Meditech order with the physician's order.
• Follow PACS and Meditech workflow: review, approve, and enter information in a timely and accurate manner after each patient.
• Notify the department and/or PACS manager of any errors or outstanding problems with completing patient data.
• Consult with the radiologist on duty to assure correct scanning parameters when necessary.
• Act as MRI Safety Officer: demonstrate safety in all MRI zones, monitor personnel and equipment entering MRI Zones III and IV, conduct proper screening of patients for ferromagnetic objects (pacemakers, watches, bank cards).
• Report to MRI Safety Committee and train and educate staff regarding MRI safety.
• Ensure compliance of MRI safety policy and review and update MRI policies.
• Conduct safety audits accurately and as instructed.
• Provide excellent patient care and create an environment in which customers feel valued and respected.
• Demonstrate a caring and interested manner: listen carefully to customers' questions and concerns, paraphrase statements, seek feedback, maintain appropriate eye contact, and handle telephone and in‑person contacts in a friendly, courteous, and sensitive manner.
• Provide patients with explanations (within scope of practice) of upcoming exams and procedures, using terminology appropriate for patient age, language skills, and emotional state.
• Maintain HIPAA compliance: strict patient confidentiality at all times.
• Work effectively as part of a department/unit team and exercise delegated authority to troubleshoot operational and programmatic problems.
• Resolve differences cooperatively and recommend changes to policies and procedures to enhance service and quality.
• Accept other assignments as requested by department management, such as front‑office assistance, patient transport, or QA projects.
• Utilize hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably; proactively assist in other areas when volume is low.
• Ensure supply usage is cost‑effective and appropriately charged.
• Seek innovative solutions for problems affecting care or service (maintenance of quality, cost effectiveness, efficiency of staffing).
• Apply Lean principles and participate in Lean board sessions.

Physical Requirements
