Job summary

Orlando Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist to join its clinical laboratory team. The role involves evaluating specimens, verifying results, performing QC, and assisting in training staff in a high-volume hospital setting in Orlando, Florida.

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree (or an equivalent substitution) and a Florida licensure as a Medical Technologist or MLS-eligible, with successful completion of a clinical laboratory training internship.

Qualifications

• Minimum a Bachelor's degree; associates degree with 2 years related experience may substitute.
• Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.
• Florida license as a Medical Technologist or eligibility; ASCP/AAB/AMT certification preferred.
• One year of related laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors.
• Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
• Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.
• Receives general guidance and direction on moderately complex procedures.
• Maintains knowledge of other areas in the laboratory and how they are related.
• Works semi-autonomously to accomplish assigned tasks.
• Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver.
• Assists in training of new team members and students.

Position Summary Orlando Health is a 3,200-bed system that includes 15 wholly-owned hospitals and emergency departments; rehabilitation services, cancer institutes, heart institutes, imaging and laboratory services, wound care centers, physician offices for adults and pediatrics, skilled nursing facilities, an in-patient behavioral health facility, home healthcare services in partnership with LHC Group, and urgent care centers in partnership with CareSpot Urgent Care. Licensure/Certification

• Valid American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification or;
• Valid American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification or;
• Valid Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) certification.
• Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.
• Valid Certified Radiologic Technologist licensure by the State of Florida (Preferred).

Responsibilities

• Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors.
• Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
• Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.
• Receives a general guidance and direction, typically on moderately complex procedures only.
• Has knowledge of other areas in the laboratory and how they are related.
• Works semi-autonomously to accomplish task assigned.
• Verify instrument performance standards including linearity, reportable range and method comparisons.
• Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
• Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.
• Assists with inventory management.
• Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver.
• Evaluate accuracy of results considering all phases of testing to include preanalytical, analytical and post analytical sources of error.
• Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues and pending work at shift change to the oncoming MLS.
• Responds to work related technical inquiries.
• Assists in the training of new team members and students.

Attendance & Compliance

• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Other Related Functions

• Performs specimen collection procedures, specimen receiving and processing as required.
• Answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.
• Maintains current job knowledge in order to effectively instruct students or other personnel.
• Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
• Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.

Qualifications

Education/Training

• Bachelor's degree required. Associate's degree and two years of directly related experience may substitute for the Bachelor's degree (in addition to the requirements listed in the Experience section).
• Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.

Licensure/Certification

• Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist certified in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned.
• National Certification such as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred.

Experience

• One (1) years minimum experience. Based on area of assignment department specific competencies may be required.
