Job description

Performs responsible work by the safe operation of several types of heavy or special purpose motorized equipment used by the County. The MEO III also services and makes minor repairs to the equipment and performs various manual tasks when not operating the equipment. This class differs from that of a MEO II as the employee must have a higher level of skill and knowledge in order to operate more complicated pieces of heavy motor equipment.

Primary Responsibilities
  1. Mostly operates a backhoe, loader, and grader to execute park projects, and operates 3 point hitch tractors and implements to disperse agricultural products for the care of athletic fields and facilities.
  2. Operates heavy trucks, dump trucks, excavator, track loader, backhoe, and grader. When not operating heavy equipment, operates tractors and lighter motorized equipment.
  3. Adjusts agricultural equipment and implements to properly apply seeds, fertilizers, and chemicals at the directed rates to maintain cool season and warm season grasses.
  4. Operates mowing tractors, trimmers, and other turf equipment as required.
  5. Performs basic maintenance checks on equipment, vehicles, and trailers. Makes minor repairs, cleans, and properly secures equipment.
  6. Assists in supervising full-time and temporary employees, and the Inmate Crew, providing performance feedback to supervisors.
  7. Supervises and/or performs restoration of construction projects including grading, planting, seeding, and constructing fences.
  8. Makes recommendations for material needs for projects and budget planning.
  9. Enforces safety procedures and regulations, including OSHA standards.
  10. Reads site plans, construction drawings, and performs basic surveying for small projects.
  11. Supports county operations such as snow removal and emergency responses.
  12. Performs rough and finished carpentry, masonry, and concrete work.
Qualifications

Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience Required: Two or more years’ experience operating motorized equipment at the level of a MEO II, with some lead or supervisory experience.

Preferred: Experience with heavy-duty special purpose equipment related to parks maintenance and construction.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s license with air brake certification and a good driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicator License within six months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of safety principles and practices for heavy equipment operation.
  • Ability to operate various heavy and light motorized equipment.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance.
  • Supervisory and training skills.
  • Physical ability for manual labor and operating heavy equipment.
  • Ability to maintain records and perform basic surveying.
Additional Requirements

Must pass a qualifications test, background check, DMV record review, physical exam, and meet environmental and physical demands as specified.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May lead staff in the absence of the supervisor.
