Job description

The Mortgage Lender is responsible for developing, originating, and managing residential mortgage loan relationships in accordance with the Bank’s lending policies, underwriting standards, compliance requirements, and customer service expectations. This position serves as a primary point of contact for mortgage applicants, guides customers through the mortgage process, gathers and evaluates application information, and works closely with lending, processing, underwriting, closing, and servicing personnel to provide a professional and efficient lending experience.

The Mortgage Lender is expected to represent the Bank professionally in the community, build and maintain referral relationships, promote responsible lending practices, and ensure all loan activity is conducted in a safe, sound, fair, and compliant manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Originate residential mortgage loans by interviewing applicants, discussing loan options, explaining general program requirements, and assisting customers with the application process.
  • Gather, review, and evaluate borrower information, including income, assets, credit history, collateral information, and other documentation required for mortgage loan consideration.
  • Analyze customer needs and recommend appropriate mortgage products consistent with Bank policy, investor requirements, regulatory standards, and the customer’s financial circumstances.
  • Maintain regular communication with applicants, real estate professionals, referral sources, internal staff, and other parties involved in the mortgage process.
  • Develop and maintain mortgage lending relationships through customer outreach, community involvement, professional networking, and referral partner engagement.
  • Prepare and submit complete and accurate loan files for processing, underwriting, approval, closing, and funding in a timely manner.
  • Monitor loan pipelines and follow up on outstanding documentation, conditions, deadlines, and customer communications.
  • Ensure loan applications and related activities comply with applicable laws, regulations, Bank policies, fair lending standards, privacy requirements, and consumer protection obligations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of mortgage products, lending procedures, underwriting requirements, rate and fee structures, regulatory changes, and market conditions.
  • Protect confidential customer and Bank information and follow all information security, privacy, authentication, and remote work requirements.
  • Meet production, service, quality, compliance, and documentation expectations established by management.
  • Participate in training, staff meetings, audits, compliance reviews, and other Bank initiatives as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, real estate, or a related field preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any registration, licensing, or credentials required for mortgage loan origination, including registration through the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System and Registry, if applicable.
  • Knowledge of residential mortgage loan products, loan documentation, credit analysis, underwriting concepts, and real estate collateral is preferred.
  • Strong customer service, sales, communication, organization, and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to explain lending products and process requirements clearly and professionally to customers.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow Bank policies, procedures, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple loan files, deadlines, and customer communications simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, document management systems, loan origination systems, and other Bank-approved technology.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining accountability, responsiveness, confidentiality, and productivity.
Compliance and Risk Management Responsibilities

The Mortgage Lender is responsible for conducting lending activities in accordance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including but not limited to fair lending, consumer protection, privacy, Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering expectations, mortgage disclosure requirements, and the Bank’s internal lending policies and procedures. The employee must promptly report known or suspected compliance concerns, suspicious activity, information security incidents, customer complaints, or policy exceptions to the appropriate manager or department.

Out of Bank Work Expectations
  • This position may occasionally perform work both on-site at Bank facilities and remotely, as approved by management.
  • On-site presence may be required for customer meetings, loan closings, staff meetings, training, community events, business development activities, compliance needs, audits, or other operational requirements.
  • Remote work must be performed using Bank-approved equipment, systems, security controls, and communication methods.
  • The employee must maintain a professional remote work environment that protects customer privacy, confidential Bank information, and loan documentation.
  • Out of Bank work eligibility may be modified, suspended, or discontinued based on business needs, performance, security requirements, compliance obligations, or management discretion.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position generally operates in a professional office environment and approved remote work setting. The employee must be able to use standard office equipment, including a computer, telephone, scanner, printer, and related technology. The position may require sitting for extended periods, viewing a computer screen, communicating by phone or video conference, attending in-person meetings, and occasionally traveling for customer meetings, community events, training, or business development activities.
