Job summary

St. John the Baptist Catholic Montessori School is seeking a Montessori Assistant to support classroom operations, faith formation, and daily activities with young learners. You will collaborate closely with the Montessori Guide and catechists to foster a faith-based Montessori environment.

The role emphasizes positive discipline, professional communication with parents, and maintaining a safe, organized classroom aligned with school policies and autonomy for children’s growth.

Responsibilities

  • Share responsibility for care and maintenance of classroom materials and supplies.
  • Perform light janitorial work as needed for accidents or cleanliness.
  • Keep the environment safe per risk management and accreditation requirements.
  • Report accidents/incidents and share information with Montessori Guide/Principal.
  • Work with individuals or small groups as directed; substitute as needed.
  • Keep attendance records and assist daily observation and recording of work.
  • Supervise daily recess.
  • Meet weekly with the Guide to discuss needs.
  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of children at all times.
  • Direct all parent communication to the Montessori Guide.
  • Work with catechists to assist in faith formation.
  • Attend and help supervise school functions outside regular hours.
  • Help plan and supervise activities during the school day.
  • Support the school’s mission to parents and external constituents.
  • Assist the Principal with recruitment, welcoming visitors.
  • Attend staff and professional development meetings as required.
  • Assist with organizational tasks such as celebrations and stock management.

Job description

Qualifications:

Montessori Assistant shall…1. Adhere to the mission of St. John the Baptist Catholic Montessori School.2. Be a practicing Roman Catholic.3. Have or build an understanding of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and work with trainedcatechists in the faith formation of children. Trained catechists preferred.4. Have an understanding of the Montessori philosophy of education.5. Love God and desire to share their faith with others.6. Love children and desire to help them in their personal character, virtue, and faith development.7. Be able to discipline children positively with gentleness, firmness, and consistency.8. Be able to maintain a positive working relationship with other staff, especially the Montessori Guide.9. Be able to maintain strong relationships with parents; characterized by mutual respect, good will, andwith the understanding that parents are the primary educators of their children.10. Maintain professionalism in speech, dress, action, and confidentiality.

Time Expectations:
  • Be present to supervise children and assist the Montessori Guide on school contact days from 7:30 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. or alternative hours as specified by the employment offer letter or with the expresspermission of the Principal.
  • Commit time to professional development and training toward the achievement of personal and schoolgoals.
Responsibilities:
  1. Share responsibility for the care and maintenance of classroom materials, dusting and cleaning theenvironment, refilling supplies, and properly storing all classroom supplies as directed by the MontessoriGuide.
  2. Perform light janitorial work in the event of accidents, i.e. spills, bathroom accidents, illness, etc.
  3. Make sure the environment is safe per the school’s risk management and emergency plans and in linewith governmental and accreditation requirements. Be aware of and help maintain the environment tokeep children with allergies safe.
  4. Report and document any accidents/incidents and behavior issues and share needed information withthe Classroom Guide and/or Principal.
  5. Work with individuals or small groups of children as directed by the Montessori Guide or Principal. Maybe required to substitute as needed.
  6. Keep current attendance records and help in the daily observation and recording of children’s work.
  7. Supervise daily recess
  8. Meet with the Montessori Guide weekly to discuss student and environment needs
  9. Understand, share, and accept the responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of the children at all times.
  10. Direst all parent communication to the Montessori Guide
  11. Work with catechists to assist in the faith formation of children.
  12. Attend and help supervise at school functions outside of the school day and/or off campus as required.
  13. Help plan, organize, and supervise activities and events that occur during the school day.
  14. Support the school’s mission, purposes, and objectives in a positive manner to parents and outsideconstituents.
  15. Assist the Principal with recruitment efforts including the welcoming of parent and student visitors.
  16. Attend monthly staff meetings, assistant meetings, workshops, and professional developmentopportunities as required by or in consultation with the Principal.
  17. Work with the Montessori Guide to complete necessary organizational tasks, i.e. birthday celebrations,snack and pantry stocking, and classroom celebrations.
Examples of Specific Daily Duties:
  1. Prior to children arriving:
    1. Prepare classroom per the Guide's guidelines
    2. Make copies and prepare materials as needed
  2. Greet children in hallway as they arrive. Help them become independent with coats, shoes, boots, etc., as necessary. Monitor school uniform requirements.
  3. Take daily attendance
  4. Join intial circle and prayer as time permits
  5. Help children settle into work
  6. Observe children in work areas and redirect as needed
  7. Atrium supervision - when directed by the Montessori Guide
  8. Daily Clean-Up
    1. Clean up art area
    2. Wash dishes if needed
    3. Supervise lunch setup
    4. Reinstate order to shelves
    5. Check for wet/dirty towels and replace with dry/clean ones
    6. Any other activities as designated by the Montessori Guide
  9. Monitor outside play at the end of the morning session and wait until all children are picked up by their parent/guardian. Children are not to be left unattended and the required adult-child ratio must be maintained.
  10. Meet weekly with the Guide to discuss student and classroom needs.
