Job Title: Monitor Technician Cost Center: Critical Care

Job Description: The Monitor Tech is responsible for providing intensive care technical support along with patient care duties as assigned by RN. Monitor Tech received direction and assignments from RNs. Performing a wide variety of patient support services. These services include but are not limited to, maintaining a clean and safe environment for the patients, providing food and nutritional service for patients and providing selected patient care services. The Monitor Tech will work under the supervision of the registered nurse in collaboration with Environmental Services, Nutrition Services, and Engineering. This Monitor Tech responsibility or including continuous observation of cardiac telemetry monitoring for recognition of dysrhythmias and notification of the ICU charge care leader, the primary and/or caseload RN's of the dysrhythmias. The Monitor Tech also is responsible for performs receptionist and secretarial duties on the patient care unit while functioning as the focal communication source in the nursing station. The Monitor Tech is responsible for the accurate transcription of physician's orders, while managing patient documentation systems.

Physical Demands
  1. Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
  2. Possess physical agility and adequate reaction time to respond quickly and appropriately to unexpected patient care needs.
  3. Needs adequate hearing and visual acuity, including adequate color vision.
  4. Requires fine motor skills, adequate eye-hand coordination, and ability to grasp and handle objects.
  5. Able to use proper body mechanics to assist patients in ambulating, transferring in and out of bed, chair or wheelchair.
  6. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  7. Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
  8. Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.
  9. May require periodic use of personal computer.
Essential Functions
  1. Works with all the members of the unit in a team approach in the delivery of patient care.
  2. Takes a systems approach to problem solving and process improvement, with an emphasis on patient safety.
  3. Awareness of patients needs prioritizes needs of the patients and works to fulfill those needs, report's findings to the RN. Maintains awareness of change in patient census, prioritizes workload so that the most important tasks are completed first.
  4. Request and collect necessary supplies and equipment; transports to assigned areas.
  5. Orients patients to treatment rooms, call light, informing patient of plan of care, duration and time that they will be back.
  6. Performs direct patient care as assigned by an RN.
  7. Properly cleans equipment and rooms in between patients.
  8. Demonstrates the ability to function as a Monitor/Telemetry Tech in the Critical Care Unit. Recognizes adult and pediatric dysrythmias and reports them to the primary or caseload RN. Programs telemetry central station with appropriate patient information. Completes telemetry log to ensure appropriate tracking of telemetry units. Reports any equipment malfunction immediately to charge nurse and biomed.
  9. Demonstrates the ability to function as a Unit Secretary within the Critical Care Unit. Performs transcription performance standards as listed on the US skills list. Facilitates communication functions and collaboration of interdisciplinary team members to support patient/family care delivery. Performs clerical duties by prioritizing and transcribing medical staff practitioner orders in an accurate and timely manner via the order entry system.
