EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Casual (as-needed basis)

Job Summary

This position serves the hospital patient population by observing and monitoring cardiac rhythms/capnography, recognizing changes in regularity, configuration and rate of rhythm, and reporting findings to the primary nurse. The Technician also documents and communicates monitored recordings, performs clerical functions, and provides patient care duties to facilitate efficient and comprehensive services in critical care areas. The Nurse Director/House Supervisor may re‑assign to other units based on changes in volume and acuity.

Job Duties
Clerical Duties
  1. Accurately identify and enter patient information: initials and telemetry box number into the monitor system.
  2. Assemble and disassemble patient shadow charts in a timely fashion.
  3. Promptly and accurately respond to delegated tasks within scope of practice.
  4. During EHR downtime, accurately and promptly complete necessary paperwork to ensure tests, consults and treatments are initiated/completed.
  5. Report appropriate overhead pages via the paging system to the Admitting staff in accordance with established organizational procedures.
  6. Complete after‑visit summary (AVS) and any additional discharge or transfer process.
  7. Maintain a clean and organized workstation.
  8. Identify all patient information using HIPAA standards.
Patient Care Duties
  1. Assist in the delivery of patient care as directed to include transfers, ambulation, feeding, dressing, bathing, weighing and toileting.
  2. Promptly deliver specimens and supplies within the hospital.
  3. Respond promptly to all patient safety alarms, e.g., call lights, bed and chair alarms.
  4. Apply monitors and report to the RN the effectiveness of any safety device or mobility alarm.
  5. Participate with the RN in rounding for patient safety checks and customer service.
  6. Initiate cleaning of patient care areas upon discharge and prepare the room for new admission by disinfecting, changing linen, restocking supplies, removing garbage and readying equipment.
  7. Notify primary nurse immediately of significant changes in monitor patterns and follow the chain of command if no response or inappropriate response occurs.
  8. Accurately recognize and report life‑threatening arrhythmias (Ventricular Tachycardia, Ventricular Fibrillation, Asystole).
  9. Accurately interpret and measure intervals of the cardiac rhythm and other parameters upon admission, at the beginning of each shift, and with significant changes.
  10. Advocate for the patient by ensuring appropriate alarms are on and limits are set — individualized for the patient in collaboration with the RN or physician or deferring to default settings when appropriate.
  11. Alert to alarms when not directly in eye sight of monitor while initiating NA duties.
  12. Advocate for patient safety by troubleshooting problems at the bedside; performing battery replacement, ensuring the replacement of electrodes to achieve the best possible waveform in a timely manner.
  13. Demonstrate accurate interpretation of monitors including appropriate documentation and communication of monitored recordings to the primary nurse.
  14. Provide the primary nurse with a printout of a rhythm strip (with a clear baseline) on admission, at the beginning of each shift, and with significant changes in rhythm for documentation in the patient’s medical record.
General Responsibilities
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with hospital safety, disaster and emergency procedures.
  2. Clean and disinfect equipment as needed, keeping unit clean and organized.
  3. Attend required in‑services and a minimum of 50% yearly attendance at unit staff meetings.
  4. Understand and adhere to departmental policies and procedures.
  5. Deliver care in adherence to the policies and procedures of Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital.
  6. Perform and demonstrate competency of CNA responsibilities for patient care.
  7. Exhibit excellent communication, teamwork, collaboration, and interpersonal relationship skills.
  8. Ability to sit observing monitoring for extended periods of time.
  9. Order and maintain supplies needed for monitoring.
  10. Demonstrate proper maintenance and inventory of all equipment to facilitate optimal working condition.
  11. Inventory and maintain monitor equipment: portable Spacelab monitors and hardware monitor equipment for daily use.
  12. Maintain equipment inventory log daily.
  13. Report missing equipment to the Biomedical for replacement or report issues to charge nurse or supervisor.
  14. Remove equipment from patient use when in need of repair, collaborate with Biomedical engineering and inventory for equipment return. Complete maintenance request order.
Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Graduate of a Nursing Aide or EMT program.
  • Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry or certification through National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMs) or Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board is preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 months telemetry monitoring experience required.
  • Basic ECG training, reading and interpretation at time of hire or within 30 days of formal telemetry training preferred.
  • ECG certification or obtain within 30 days.
  • BLS Certification or ability to obtain within two months of hire and maintain certification.
  • One‑year of relevant medical education/experience including hands‑on patient care in a healthcare environment required.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to and follow Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital Mission, Values, Vision and policies.
  • Maintains reliable and consistent attendance.
