Short Summary
The Monitor Technician collaborates with registered nurses to monitor patients on telemetry, interpret cardiac rhythms, and provide timely documentation and support for emergency care.
Job Responsibilities
- Under the direction of a registered professional nurse, perform the following activities:
- Provide continuous EKG monitoring and interpretation for telemetry patients.
- Observe and document EKG rhythms.
- Run and interpret strips for CCU (every 2 hours) and Telemetry Unit (every 4 hours), label rhythms, and place strips in assigned locations.
- Adjust or replace EKG equipment as necessary for optimal signal quality.
- Ensure alarms are set and audible.
- Instruct patients on telemetry system use and maintenance; order and inventory needed supplies.
- Notify staff promptly of changes in heart rate, rhythm, or other patient information.
- Document changes and place rhythm strips in the medical record.
- Assist in Code Blue and other emergencies, including cardioversion and pacemaker reprogramming by running appropriate strips.
- Document arterial and Swan Ganz waveforms along with hemodynamic profiles (CO, SVR, CI, etc.).
- Provide trending information from monitors as requested.
- Accurately label all rhythm strips, indicating drips, DNR orders, and pacemakers.
- Maintain equipment and supplies for the telemetry system.
- Monitor equipment daily and order supplies on a daily/weekly basis; complete replacement orders weekly and obtain Director's signature.
- Document telemetry monitoring equipment location each shift on the Telemetry Transmitter Location sheet and complete monitor counts.
- Clean lead wires and transmitters after each patient use and return them to storage.
- Arrange for sterilization of equipment as needed.
- Notify clinical technical services of equipment malfunctions promptly.
- Maintain other testing equipment on the unit (glucometers, pacemakers, pulse oximeters, etc.).
- Perform maintenance checks every 12 hours for emergency care, transport monitors, and defibrillators.
- When the clerk coordinator is absent, handle the following reception duties:
- Greet, direct, and welcome patients, visitors, and staff.
- Assist patients, visitors, and staff as needed.
- Answer the unit telephone promptly.
- Take accurate messages and communicate them clearly to staff.
- Page and transfer telephone calls as needed.
- Transcribe and process physician medication orders into the computer system.
- Provide orientation for new unit personnel regarding monitoring operations, cardiac systems, and rhythm strip interpretation.
- Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure care incorporates attributes of Careful Nursing and promotes safety, comfort, and collaboration.
- Carries out other duties related to patient care and unit operations as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma required.
- LPN licensure preferred, successful completion of a cardiovascular program, previous EKG, and CCP experience preferred.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
- Ability to quickly recognize changes in patient condition and needs.
- Knowledge of patient growth and development needs.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in carrying out work duties.
