Summary / Objective

The Monitor Technician is responsible for the monitoring of cardiac monitors to notify Nursing Units of abnormal variations.

Essential Job Duties

• Confirm the name of the nurse caring for the telemetry patient is confirmed upon initial placement and updated every shift directly on the Centralized Telemetry Monitoring Unit (CTMU) monitor.
• Observe cardiac monitors and listen for alarms to identify abnormal variations in heart rhythm and report important changes to nursing staff immediately. Post strips on patient records according to established guidelines.
• Print and interpret cardiac strips on patient admission, once a shift, and upon rhythm abnormalities. Place the strips on the Waveform/ECG Mounting Form and take the forms to the respective units according to established guidelines.
• Once an order is received to discontinue telemetry and the nurse or UAP disconnects the telemetry transmitter from the patient, clean the telemetry transmitter and cardiac leads with the recommended bactericidal solution and store them in the unit’s telemetry transmitter cabinet.
• Monitor telemetry equipment for optimum effectiveness. Report problems with equipment to the Director. Once a telemetry outage is identified, activate the Service Disruption/Emergency Operations Plan by dialing the hospital emergency number 5555 and reporting the outage location. Notify the Nursing supervisor.
• Perform clerical duties for the department, prepare requisitions for supplies and secure authorizing signature from the Director as required, and assist in keeping the station and department clean and neat following the cleaning schedule.
