Job summary

Bosch USA is seeking a Research Scientist in Sunnyvale, CA to drive the transformation of academic research into next-generation molecular diagnostics and biosensing technologies. You will collaborate with Stanford/UC Berkeley and Bosch units to advance prototype systems.

The role emphasizes advanced instrumentation, single-molecule detection, and chip-scale integration, with opportunities to publish and patent innovative work.

Qualifications

• PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Physics, or a related discipline).
• 3-5 years of previous industry experience translating academic ideas into real-world products.
• Proven experience in molecular diagnostics, especially single-molecule detection and instrumentation.
• Integrated molecular diagnostic platforms experience (cartridge design, on-chip sample-prep, electronics).
• Soft electronics experience for biosensing applications.
• Micro/Nanofabrication experience for biosensing chip design and process development.
• Familiarity with biochemistry and patent filings.
• Strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills; ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• Identify, incubate, and translate cutting-edge academic research into functional, scalable proof-of-concept technologies in molecular diagnostics and biosensing.
• Lead hands-on development and testing of prototype diagnostic systems, integrating microfluidics, electrochemical sensing, soft electronics, and chip-scale nanofabrication.
• Collaborate with internal business units, engineering teams, and external academic partners to transition early-stage research into commercially viable product pipelines.
• Design and execute advanced experiments for single-molecule detection, assay integration, and sample-to-answer cartridge performance.
• Protect innovation through patent filings while contributing high-impact scientific publications and technical documentation.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in biosensors and bioelectronics, advising multidisciplinary teams on feasibility, risk, and architecture.
