YMCA of the Jersey Shore is seeking a part-time Mixed Martial Arts Instructor at the Old Bridge branch. The role involves delivering age-appropriate martial arts curriculum, promoting fitness and sportsmanship, and upholding the Y’s core values.

You will plan lessons, supervise classes, ensure safety, and work with a supervisor to achieve program goals. Shift is daytime, in-person at the Old Bridge facility, with emphasis on participation and community impact.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 21 years of age or older.
  • High school education/GED equivalent.
  • Experience with in-house martial arts testing required.
  • Previous experience coaching or instructing youth.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a martial arts instructor.
  • Coaching certification or equivalent preferred.
  • Communicate effectively with youth and adults.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate YMCA core character values in all interactions and commit to professional development.
  • Create written lesson plans for age-appropriate, progressive sessions.
  • Teach foundational skills: stances, footwork, balance, movement, basic strikes, blocks, defensive movements, and combinations.
  • Lead program sessions and promote objectives and growth.
  • Monitor participants, ensure fair treatment, and engage those less involved.
  • Maintain rosters, attendance, safety, and reporting of accidents or incidents.
  • Represent the YMCA professionally and attend required meetings and trainings.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Mixed Martial Arts Instructor at the Old Bridge branch of the YMCA of the Jersey Shore intentionally fosters a cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined. Under the direct supervision of the Regional Youth & Sports Director, the Mixed Martial Arts Instructor will carry out sport program curriculum, promoting skill development, good sportsmanship, healthy living and a passion for sport participation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Demonstrate YMCA core character values of honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and inclusivity in all interactions with employees, members, staff and others; commit to ongoing professional development.
  • Must always be on time and ready for your scheduled shift, which includes but is not limited to adhering to the established branch and department dress code.
  • Create written lesson plans for the program session that is age-appropriate and progressive.
  • Teach foundational skills such as stances, footwork, balance, movement, basic strikes, blocks, defensive movements, and controlled combinations. Incorporate fitness, coordination, flexibility, agility, and body-control exercises into each class.
  • Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each program session.
  • Work with Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.
  • Leads participants through the intended individual, small group and/or group program curriculum; Maintains the roster and attendance tracking.
  • Monitors participant activity to ensure all are engaged, being treated fairly, and provided equal opportunities. Proactively adjusts to engage those not actively participating.
  • Interacts with participants and parents in a positive manner that reflects a "family friendly" YMCA.
  • Exercise sound judgment in relation to member safety & injuries. Follow all emergency procedures.
  • Visually inspect work area and equipment for safety and risk, report any problems to supervisor. Sanitize and properly store mats, pads, targets, and other program equipment.
  • Responsible for filling out accident/incident reports. Additionally, report any unsafe or suspicious activity directly to the sports & enrichment director or Director on Duty..
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with youth. Complete required abuse risk management trainings, New Team Member Orientation, and First Aid & CPR/AED certification within 30 days of hire. Follow mandated abuse reporting procedures, including reporting suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Represent the YMCA in a professional manner and promote a positive and cheerful environment.
  • Attend and participate in all required staff meetings and continuing job training.
  • Be able to complete payroll on time each week on the payroll Mobile application on your personal phone.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties assigned by Regional Youth & Sports Director or Branch Executive Director.
