Job summary

The Ninth Circuit Public Defender’s Office seeks a Disposition Specialist to support Assistant Public Defenders with comprehensive case management, mitigation development, and fact-based investigation in juvenile and adult criminal cases.

The role blends social-service oriented mitigation with traditional investigative duties, identifying needs and crafting alternative sentencing and placement plans. Community resources and multidisciplinary staffing are integral.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Human Services, or related field.
• Experience in case management, social services, mitigation, or behavioral-health work.
• Strong writing, communication, and computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial interviews with juvenile and adult clients to identify factors impacting legal representation.
• Provide clients with appropriate community resource information and coordinate referrals to support services.
• Prepare organized mitigation materials such as narrative reports and timelines.
• Collaborate with Assistant Public Defenders to develop defense strategies and disposition options.
• Participate in multidisciplinary case staffing to identify barriers and improve client outcomes.
• Conduct investigations by interviewing clients, witnesses, and collateral contacts; locate witnesses; and record results.
• Obtain, review, and analyze records to support case investigation and disposition planning.
