Job summary

Northern Star Resources Limited in Delta Junction, Alaska is seeking a Graduate Mining Engineer to assist the Mine Engineering team with operational and engineering requirements, following site procedures and working in office and underground workplaces.

The role reports to the Chief Mining Engineer and involves creating mining instructions, performing reconciliations, conducting inspections, developing short-term schedules, and participating in department meetings during a 15 day on/13 day off

Qualifications

What’s the role?

The Graduate Mining Engineer reports to the Chief Mining Engineer, and the primary role is to assist the Mine Engineering team with operational and engineering requirements. This includes using site procedures and processes to conduct specific tasks under the direction of Senior Engineers, and includes working in office and /or underground workplaces.

The specifics:

• Review all engineering department guidelines and training manuals and apply them in day-to-day work practises. Note improvement opportunities within these to the Senior Mining Engineer .
• Under the supervision of the Chief Mining Engineer:
  • Create mining instructions for the direction of operational activities – including development instructions, drilling designs, blast plans, etc.
  • Conduct post mining reconciliation reviews.
  • Conduct mine area inspections to ensure mine instructions have been executed and quality aspects are in line with expectations.
  • Conduct mine inspections / surveys to record the mine operating environmental conditions and report finding to senior operational personnel ( e.g. ventilation surveys, monthly area inspections, etc.)
  • Develop short term mining schedules and present these to the technical and operating team.
  • Participatein department meets by raising pertinent issues and providing follow-up on actions as required.
• Participate in site graduate training programs, which may include operation aspects, exposure to other disciplines (geology, survey, mineral processing).
• Ensure all safety related activities are undertaken in accordance with Company policy and MSHA requirements including Hazard ID’s, pre-start checks, pre-start meetings, and incident reporting.
• Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in all work areas.
• Other duties as required.

Qualifications Required

• Engineering Degree majoring in Mining (or other relevant major) from a recognised tertiary institution
• Current Driver’s License.

Desired Experience & Competencies

• Minimum 1 year relevant experience in the mining industry – proof of mine site internwork.
• Computer literacy – Microsoft Office (extensive excel skills is a requirement).
• Pragmatic approach to trouble shooting and problem solving.
• Demonstrate ability to maintain or exceed best industry practice in all engineering tasks.
• Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
• Awareness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.
• Be able to pass a background check andpost offerphysical.

Working a 15 day on, 13 day off rotating schedule up to 12.0 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
