Job summary

Northern Star Resources Limited is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to ensure geotechnical risks are managed to safely achieve production targets at our Alaska operation. You will work with the Senior Geotechnical Engineer on site, reviewing GCMPs, conducting evaluations, and supporting training and development across the team.

Join a dynamic mining operation based in Alaska with a remote camp, offering a 15 day on, 13 day off schedule, modern facilities, and opportunities for professional growth

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent.
  • Computer literacy – Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Current Driver’s License.
  • Able to pass a background check and post-offer physical.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with establishing and maintaining site systems and GCMP to manage geotechnical risks.
  • Review development mining instructions and stope designs for safe extraction.
  • Ensure compliance with Company and statutory requirements.
  • Review and update Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP).
  • Carry out geotechnical evaluations and risk assessments to manage hazards.
  • Collect and analyse geotechnical data for potential and actual rockfall events.
  • Provide support and training opportunities to Graduate Geotechnical Engineers.
  • Support technical and operations teams with short-, medium-, and long-term projects.

What’s the role?

The Geotechnical Engineer reports to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer with the primary role of ensuring that all geotechnical related issues are managed effectively to safely achieve budgeted production targets.

The specifics:

  • Assist with establishing and maintaining site systems and standards to effectively manage geotechnical risks including procedures, processes,and databases.
  • Review development mining instructions and stope designs and provide recommendations for requirements for safe extraction.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant Company and Statutory requirements.
  • Review and update Ground Control Management Plan/s (GCMP) regularly.
  • Carry out geotechnical evaluations, risk assessments and make geotechnical recommendations to ensure hazards are effectively managed.
  • Collect and analyse geotechnical data associated with the identification of potential and actual rockfall events.
  • Look for,assess,and implementbusiness Improvement opportunities.
  • Engage with site personnel on a regular basis to determine specialist geotechnical requirements.
  • Provide support,guidance,and professional development opportunities to Graduate Geotechnical Engineers.
  • Support the technical and operations teams withshort-, medium-, and long-termprojects and ensure that all geotechnical risks are considered and managed.
  • BuildeffectivecommunicationandnetworkswiththeMiningDepartment.
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly reporting ofminegeotechnical parameters.
  • Provide and monitor training opportunities in an objective process; ensure that training opportunities are made available fairly, consistently and in a manner free from discriminatory bias.
  • Review employees’ requests/applications for training based on objective evidence related to job performance,abilities,and interest.
  • Document employees’ readiness to train for tasks, noting any operational reasons related to the availability and scheduling of requested training.
  • Maintain training records of employees in the department. Monitor training register and log formal training as it occurs.
  • Participate in the review of any appeals filed by employees concerning training opportunities.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications Required
  • Degree majoring in Mining Engineering or in an equivalent field.
  • Computerliteracy– Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Abilitytocommunicateeffectivelyin writing and verbally,acrossalllevels.
  • Current Driver’s License.
  • Able to pass a background check and post-offer physical.
Desired Experience & Competencies
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the mining industry, predominantly in underground hard rock in a geotechnical engineering role.
  • Good analytical skills andpracticalapplicationofgeotechnicalknowledge.
  • Working knowledge of underground mining methods (e.g., longhole open stoping, air leg stoping and jumbo stoping).
  • Foundational experience in numerical modelling.
  • Advanced computer knowledge and skills –DeswikDesign Software, Map3D Numerical ModellingSoftware,RocscienceSoftware Suite Phase 2 and 3, Dips & Unwedge and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strongprofessionalreportwritingskills.
  • Awareness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.

Working a 15 day on, 13 day off rotating schedule up to 12.0 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi‑Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
