Job summary

Frontier-Kemper Construction Inc is seeking a Rock Driller to operate rock drills, position holes per blast plan, and load blast holes with explosives. The role requires adherence to blasting safety, PPE, and site protocols in a mining-like construction environment.

Responsibilities include pre- and post-blast tasks, mucking preparation, roof and rib support installation, and assisting in the blasting circuit. Equal opportunity employer. On-site work in US-based sites.

Qualifications

• Experience drilling rock for blasting operations in mining or construction.
• Knowledge of blast-hole planning and hole alignment.
• Ability to follow safety protocols and use PPE correctly.

Responsibilities

• Drill holes in rock according to the blast-hole plan.
• Operate hand-held or machine-mounted rock drills.
• Load blast holes with appropriate explosives and primers.
• Perform pre-blasting and post-blasting tasks and site prep.
• Assist in mucking, ventilation, and control of blasting to ensure safety.
• Install temporary and permanent roof and rib supports as required.
• Contribute to blasting circuit completion and project duties as needed.

Job description

Drills holes in rock for the placement of explosives.

• Operates hand held or machine mounted rock drills.
• Accurately positions, aligns and drills holes following the blast‑hole plan.
• Loads blast holes with explosives.
  • Prepares primers and detonators.
  • Loads and tamps the correct quantity of explosives in each hole as directed.
  • Assists in the completion of the blasting circuit.
• Performs pre‑blasting and post‑blasting functions.
  • Removes drills, pumps, hoses, hand tools and equipment from the blast area.
  • Repositions pumps, hoses and equipment after the blast.
  • Adds or removes utilities as directed.
    • Ventilation ducts and devices.
    • Air lines, water lines, communication lines, rail.
• Prepares the site for mucking (removal of broken rock).
  • Wets the muck pile to suppress blasting fumes.
  • Scales loose material from the roof and ribs using scaling bars.
  • Adds, replaces and repairs ventilation devices as necessary.
• Assists as needed in the mucking cycle.
  • Tends hoses, unhooks and hooks muck buckets.
  • Relays signals to the Hoist Operator.
• Installs short term roof and rib support as required.
  • Installs temporary roof jacks as required.
  • Uses hand held or machine mounted rock drills to install rock bolts in the roof and ribs.
• Installs permanent roof and rib support.
  • Installs timbers, steel sets, steel liner plates, wooden or steel lagging as required.
  • Ties rebar, removes and resets concrete forms maintaining correct alignments.
  • Places concrete using concrete buckets or concrete pumps.
• Generally performs all duties associated with the construction of the project that are not specifically assigned to others.
