Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan is seeking a Mine Engineer in New Mexico to develop mining plans and support short- and long-range production goals at a copper mining complex. You will participate in feasibility studies, estimate ore reserves, and monitor methods and equipment to maximize productivity while maintaining safety standards.

The role requires a degree in Mine Engineering (or related) with relevant experience, strong research abilities, and excellent communication.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mine Engineering or related Engineering discipline and three (3) years of related experience in Engineering.
• Master's degree in Mine Engineering or related Engineering discipline and two (2) years of related experience in Engineering.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of Mine Engineering.
• Able to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Develop mining plans based on geological information to support short/long-range planning and production goals.
• Participate in Engineering feasibility studies to define mining methods, equipment selection, mine site facilities, and manpower/production requirements.
• Assist in preparation of detailed ore reserve estimates.
• Monitor mining methods and equipment to improve performance.
• Ensure maximum productivity and extraction rates by optimizing mining methods, procedures, and equipment.
• Assist in developing and managing mine, mine ventilation, waste dumps and stockpile designs.
• Recommend actions to eliminate production problems and improve safety, operations, costs and environment.
• Work with Geologists in exploration and assist in Engineering phase of developments and operations.
• Monitor mine ventilation and air quality at sites.
• Perform other duties as required.

Where You Will Work

Chino is an open-pit copper mining complex located 15 miles from the historic mining community of Silver City in southwestern New Mexico. The historic Chino mine was among the world's first low-grade, open-pit copper mines. Today, the operation consists of a 36,000-metric-ton-per-day concentrator that produces copper and a 150-million-pound-per-year solvent extraction/electrowinning plant that produces copper cathode from solution generated by run-of-mine leaching.

What You Will Do

• Develop mining plans based on all available geological information to support short and/or long-range planning and production goals.
• Participate in Engineering feasibility studies to define proper mining methods, equipment selection, mine site facilities, and manpower and production requirements.
• Assist in the preparation of detailed ore reserve estimates.
• Monitor mining methods and equipment to improve performance.
• Ensure maximum productivity and extraction rates by optimizing mining methods, procedures, and equipment.
• Assist in developing and managing mine, mine ventilation, waste dumps and stockpile designs.
• Recommend courses of action designed to eliminate potential production problems and to improve safety, operational efficiency, control production costs and protect the environment.
• Work with Geologists in exploration and assists in the Engineering phase of developments and operational activities.
• Monitor mine ventilation and air quality at working sites throughout the mine.
• Perform other duties as required.

What You Bring To Freeport

• Bachelor's degree in Mine Engineering or related Engineering discipline and three (3) years of related experience in Engineering, OR
• Master's degree in Mine Engineering or related Engineering discipline and two (2) years of related experience in Engineering
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of Mine Engineering
• Able to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions.

Preferred Qualifications

What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently $87,500 - $120,000. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors.
