Responsibilities

The Milling Field Manager will oversee milling operations on construction sites. The ideal candidate has a strong background in milling techniques, materials, equipment operation, team leadership, and safety protocols. Responsibilities include supervising and directing assigned crew members in preparing, executing, and finishing asphalt milling projects, coordinating with project managers, engineers, and field staff to meet timelines and quality standards.

This role requires ownership of work, ability to make informed decisions, and coordination with and direction of all job-site crews, subcontractors, and material/equipment providers. The candidate will interface with clients, inspectors, regulatory representatives, and other key individuals within the organization.

Technical: Means/Methods
  • Demonstrates technical proficiency in multiple aspects of asphalt milling.
  • Supervises hourly crewmembers and plans/schedules manpower and equipment as needed.
  • Manages deliveries from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure safety, profitability, scheduling compliance, and customer satisfaction.
Technical: Delay Free Production/Quality
  • Ensures customer satisfaction in all customer and inspector relations/interactions.
  • Plans and directs work and maximizes equipment utilization by employing delay free production.
  • Communicates productivity metrics, quality standards and daily performance to crewmembers.
  • Ensures work site is prepared for the next crew.
  • Conducts Daily Huddle meetings.
Safety
  • Follows safety programs including preplanning to identify conditions and exposures, proper PPE, and accident investigation and reporting.
  • Secures all safety equipment and PPE for themselves and crewmembers to maintain a safe operation.
  • Completes thorough preplanning that identifies unique site conditions, major exposures and controls.
  • Enforces safety procedures with crewmembers and subcontractors within their work zones.
Leadership/Supervisory/Management
  • Coordinates and collaborates with other Field Managers, Superintendents and the customer to implement project plans.
  • Provides on-the-job training to crewmembers for assigned tasks.
  • Communicates performance expectations for productivity, quality and safety; tracks progress.
  • Maintains performance documentation and provides input to salary and promotional recommendations.
  • Administers disciplinary action for crewmembers and subcontractors as appropriate, with escalation as needed.
  • Encourages teamwork, motivation, people development, and retention.
  • Enforces company policies and procedures and demonstrates leadership qualities such as accountability, integrity, collaboration, and continuous learning.
Administrative: Contract/Scheduling/Budget
  • Reviews terms and conditions of the contract and communicates with the project team as needed.
  • Develops and implements Three Week Schedules on an ongoing basis.
  • Reviews pre-job checklists and resolves issues with the project team.
  • Interprets and monitors crew cost reports and cost factors.
  • Manages timely and accurate project documentation including change orders, time and materials, purchase orders, daily reports and invoices.
  • Maintains control of materials and supplies.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises hourly operations personnel including laborers, equipment operators, drivers, and may supervise Career Track Partners. May direct subcontractors and other suppliers.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required; continuing education in construction highly desirable.
  • Minimum 3 years of construction experience in at least one trade discipline (e.g., excavation, pipe, concrete or paving) with one or more years in construction supervisory experience preferred.
  • OSHA 10 hour required.
  • Valid driver's license required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb or balance. Occasionally able to sit, use hands/fingers, stoop, kneel and crouch. Frequently able to lift up to 50 lbs. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Exposure to wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high/precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, work with explosives, and vibration. Subject to loud noise levels due to equipment operation.
