Job summary

Northwest Pipe Company - Adelanto is seeking a Mill Operator to operate various mill equipment for steel pipe production. You will weld and splice pipe, break down coils, and maintain clean, safe work areas in a fast-paced setting.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma and mill experience; FCAW/SMAW certifications are preferred. Overtime and weekend work may be required, with strong emphasis on safety and attendance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Preference for prior Mill operator experience.
• Certification in FCAW 2G/3G and SMAW 2G/3G/7018 preferred; tests may be required.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate mill equipment and assist with pipe production.
• Follow safety policies and OSHA requirements; wear PPE.
• Weld and splice pipe; break down coils; maintain workspace cleanliness.
• Read blueprints and follow job instructions; identify pipe markings.
• Communicate issues to management; maintain attendance and reliability.
• Overtime and weekend work may be required.

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:

Under frequent supervision, the Mill Operator specializes in operating various mill equipment for steel pipe production.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Follow all safety and company policies / procedures and promotes a safe culture.
• Complies with all OSHA safety requirements, work rules and regulations.
• Wear all required personal protective equipment.
• Operator various mill equipment.
• Weld and splice pipe.
• Break down coils.
• Maintain housekeeping within all production, storage and waste areas.
• Follow all work instructions, procedures, and job safety (JSA’s)
• Properly identify (mark) pipe with the use of spray paint
• Effectively communicates issues to management
• Regular, reliable, predictable attendance and performance of the essential functions
• Maintain 5’s in work area.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBLITIES:

• Safely operate machinery certified to use – overhead crane, forklift
• Propose standard operating procedures (SOPs) and job safety analysis (JSA’s)
• Other duties may be assigned as necessary
• Pick-up welding
• Mill operator II will participate in the training of Mill Operator I

JOB SCOPE:

This position provides support to the Mills department with the primary focus on equipment operation

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

There are no supervisory responsibilities for this position

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

• Must have the ability to operate and or learn the following: gap operator, floor operator, plasma torches, welding, cutting torch, power tools, air grinders, milling head operation and setup
• Must be able to use precision measuring equipment including but not limited to measuring tape and 100 th diameter tape
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics
• Ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence
• Ability to problem solve, troubleshoot, multitask and work independently with attention to detail
• Ability to work against and meet deadlines
• Must be able to operate a welding machine. Grinder and cutting torch safely.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Preference given to individuals who have previous Mill operator experience
• Current / valid certification in FCAW 2G and 3G and SMAW 2G, 3G and 7018 preferred-selected candidates will be required to provide proof of certification and or pass weld test.
• Experience operating forklifts, overhead crane and or sub arc welding helping.
