Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or related field.
  • Minimum six years in strength & conditioning, incl. 1 year in baseball.
  • CSCS certification from NSCA.
  • RSCC certification through NSCA.
  • CPR/AED certification.

  • Manage MiLB S&C budget, staffing, and facility operations.

Job description

Reports to: Director of Player Care and Performance
Classification: Full-Time/Exempt
Summary/Objective:

The Houston Astros are seeking a MiLB Strength and Conditioning Coordinator to join the Player Care and Performance Team. This position will be based in West Palm Beach, FL, with selective travel to our affiliates. This individual must demonstrate high physical preparation acumen as well as strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within a team of practitioners.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Manage and mentor team of MiLB S&C coaches across our affiliates, FCL, and DR Academy
  • Oversee and manage MiLB S&C budget, staff evaluations, facility (weight room) operations
  • Design and implement strength and conditioning programs using a science and data-led approach
  • Effectively communicate player goals to individual athletes and stakeholders
  • Establish and execute testing and exercise protocols pertaining to performance and rehabilitation
  • Teach proper execution, techniques and safety for all lifts and movement drills
  • Coach sprint, deceleration, and multidirectional movement mechanics
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with physical therapists, athletic trainers, coaches, sports scientists, dietitians, PCP staff, and athletes
  • Provide mentorship to MiLB S&C Coordinators and Coaches
  • Conduct talent dialogues (performance reviews) with MiLB S&C Coordinators and Coaches
  • Actively participate in continuing education and professional growth opportunities
  • Maintain MiLB physical preparation spaces and equipment, including Performance Science equipment
  • Consistently report player progress and regression to stakeholders
  • Collaborate with managers and player development staff to manage player load, maximize schedule efficiency, and optimize performance outcomes
  • Attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings
  • Adhere to the organization’s policies and procedures as outlined in the Astros Handbook, PCP Handbook, Medical Department Handbook, and direct communication from the Director of Player Care and Performance
  • Other duties assigned by the Director of Player Care and Performance
  • Must be flexible to work irregular hours, nights, and weekends with occasional travel
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Education and/or Experience & Skills:
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or related field
  • Minimum six years of experience in a strength and conditioning-related role, including minimum of 1 year in collegiate or professional baseball
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the NSCA
  • Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC) through the NSCA
  • CPR/AED certified
Preferred
  • Master’s degree in Exercise Science or related field
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience coaching in an NCAA or professional team environment
  • Experience with objective diagnostic testing (i.e., force plates)
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

Position will work in an athletic training room, weight room, baseball complex, office and stadium environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The noise level is usually moderate but can be loud within the stadium environment.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This role routinely will be in an inside or outside type of environment for long periods of time. This role will require the individual to be physically moving for long periods of time. This role will require the individual to lift and carry up to 25 pounds throughout the day.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Travel:

This position is required to travel to affiliates and DR Academy as needed.
